Whilst a Sergeant with 101 Squadron Holme-On-Spalding Moor, `Bill` Spinney a native of New Glasgow,Nova Scotia, Flying Lancaster W4326 on a cross country night navigation exercise, was killed along with his crew when their aircraft exploded on 16th Nov 1942,over Dolwen Hill, a mountain in Mid Wales.

Jozef Gawkowski, a native of Lomza, nr Warsaw, was on a routine training flight from No16 FTS at RAF Newton, Nottinghamshire,on 19th July 1942, when tragically he lost his life when his aircraft, Miles Master W8474, struck pylon wires nr Mottram in Longendale.
