On the night of the 7th May 1941, a squadron of JU-88As
from KG-76 at Leuwarden, Luft 111, took off for a mission
to bomb the dockyards at Liverpool,along with a squadron
of Heinkels.
Arriving over the target area on a clear summers evening,
the Anti-Aircraft batteries pounded away at the German
invaders,and night-fighter Boulton Paul Defiants soon
swung into action.
The target according to German sources was effectively
bombed,and the aircraft turned for home,however, hot on
their tails were the Defiants and whilst over the area
south of Manchester,the radio operator from a JU-88 6213,
was heard over the R/T to say that they had been hit, and
were baling out. Soon after four parachutes were seen,but
It turns out that these were from a Heinkel crew,their
aircraft having also been hit,the aircraft crashed at
Hazel Grove,Stockport.
Meanwhile, 6213 droned on into the nights sky trailing
flame and smoke,and was last seen flying over the town
of Leek in Staffordshire, heading in a NNE direction,
and by this time one wing was well ablaze and the crew
must have been about to abandon the aircraft when it flew
into rocks at Roach End,there were no survivors, as the
aircraft exploded and 3 crew lay amongst the wreck and a
4th was thrown out several yards.
