Wellington T2715 had been on a night navigation exercise on 20th August 1942, when the crew became lost in dense cloud, they were flying at 4,000ft asl, and had decided to make a descent to 2,000ft in order to pinpoint their position, however, they did not know that they were over the Western Pennine chain of hills near Penrith Cumbria and, on making the descent the Wellington collided with the moors South of Alston,at Dufton Fell. Although the aircraft had broken up and set on fire on impact with the hill, all 6 crew managed to clamber out to safety. Pilot & Navigator were blamed for carelessness, and were sent on a disciplinary course, though the weather was partly to blame, as were the pressures of war no doubt. This aircraft belonged to 25 OTU and crashed at 22.30 hrs on the 20th August 1942. Pilot: Sgt B.G.Crew. (Canadian)
