Ayr (HMS Wagtail) home to 1770 Sq Royal Navy Fleet Air

with 12 Firefly MK1s.

The aircraft had been on a Wireless Telegraphy & wind

above Fairlie, Ayrshire, killing both crew members.

Crew of DT977:

Pilot. Sub/Lt (A) James Henry Fairclough.
Nav/Radio. Sub/Lt (A) Anthony John King.

Rolls-Royce 1,735-hp Griffon engine.

RR Griffon from DT977, Found to be in a poor state and
sinking in a marsh when the site was visited in September
this year.

Main Wreckage Crater.

Just lots of tangled alloy and armour plate from the
stricken aircraft, bearly recognisable as a Firely.

Undercarriage leg from DT977.

Badly rusted undercarriage & a piece of engine mount
frame from DT977.

The Propeller Reduction Gear.

Reduction gear minus the 3 blades, no doubt the object
of souvenir hunters over the years.
