The
Father
Sharpe trophy was first awarded in 1925. It was donated
to Stroud chess club by Father Sharpe who
was a local Anglican priest and Stroud chess club
member. The trophy is engraved 'Stroud Chess Club
Handicap Challenge Cup presented by CMS (or possible
CHS)'. It is awarded on a handicap points scoring
system although the handicap system has changed
since its first inception. Games
played against human opponents are graded. |
The Ladder table (intended to replace the knock
out) will be based on a percentage scoring system
(used in the Ron Powis merit tables) over a minimum
of 4 games. Competitors who play less than four
games can still be included but their maximum
possible score will be reduced. eg 3 games max 75% 2
games max 50. (Any participating Computer percentage
score will be based on 10 games). There
will be no trophy and in the possible case of a player
reaching 4 wins after 4 games it is hoped he/she
will continue to play accepting challengers as a brave
"Champion" would. One of the more favourable
points of this system Is when you play and beat
an opponent his/her score is knocked down and so is
their maximum possible score |
Handicap system As always
in the Father-Sharpe each participant can play every
other participant twice with alternate colours.I have
also retained the one bonus points per game played
used by my predecessor.
For many years I have developed the Par system
after seeing it used in a weekend event. Over
Though not perfect it does provide a chance for lower
graded players to achieve. It is based on the
BCF grading system with positive scores achieved
by players scoring better than current grade.
Score for each other competitor not played par
score (i.e. Grade, latest grade or estimated/allocated
grade) This is similar to how a grade is calculated
if insufficient graded games are played in any
one year.(The BCF system makes it up to a minimum
of ten games or thirty over up to three years).
For each opponent beaten his/her grade plus fifty
and you will gain at least 10 points on your par
score
For each opponent you draw with his/her grade
For each opponent you lose to his/her grade less
fifty and you will lose at least 10 points on
your par score
Each participant has his/her average score calculated
based on the above scoring system and total
possible games.
To this bonus points are added and his/her par
score is deducted to give a plus/minus score.
(Ant participating Computer does not earn bonus points).
The best plus score is the winner
This scoring system favours the lower graded player
who makes the effort to play additional games
and in most cases they will finish with
a positive score. It also reflect more accurately
the grades and makes use of modern technology.

Jan Stiassny TrophyClub
Person of the year (Nominated
and voted by club members)
The
following information has been provided by Tom Newman
Can't tell you much about the Jan Stiassny (this
I think is the correct spelling; but it will
be on the cup) trophy; Stiassny, a Czech refugee I think, was
a member of the club in the 50s and 60s, perhaps
a bit beyond that; not, I think, a particularly
strong player but a great enthusiast for the game.
I can recall one time when I met him, probably
in the early/middle 60s (I was still at school).
The idea of the cup is to recognize service to the club,
not skill at chess. When the club was larger
it was awarded most years Certainly it was being
awarded when I joined the club about 25
years ago; (1981)
