Some General Info about Bryher.
The Isles Of Scilly
are situated 28 miles south west of Lands End, in the county of Cornwall.
Bryher
is the smallest one of 5 inhabited, out of a group of around 100 small islands, which are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.
But something called the North Atlantic Drift warms the islands, giving them a much milder climate than the mainland, with more sunshine, less rainfall and little or no frost and snow, allowing much beautiful flora and fauna to be found.
The Isles of Scilly are owned by the ‘Duchy of Cornwall’.
Bryher means ‘Place of Hills’, and there are five of them here, in the 327 acres, and being such a small island, you can walk around it on the coastal paths in about two hours.
Watch Hill is the best hill to climb for an all round view of Bryher and the neighbouring islands. You will find an old ‘shelter’ at the top, where, in the past, islanders used to keep watch for ships in distress, and ships needing guiding assistance.
Gweal Hill is a nice one to climb for viewing the stunning sunsets, looking out to the small uninhabited Gweal Island. The three Dartmoor ponies live on this hill.
Heathy Hill, is in the Droppy Nose Point area, and Sampson Hill, is in the Rushy Bay area, both in the southern part of the island.
Rushy Bay has one of the nicer beaches..
The fifth hill is Badplace Hill, which is in the north of the island, by Hell Bay, this bay being appropriately named because it is the roughest and most dangerous part of the island, where it is assumed that there have been many shipwrecks, but in actual fact, there has been only one, which was the ‘Maipu’..
Bryher is a beautiful island.
It is peaceful and relaxing with the sound of the sea and birds singing from dawn to dusk.
A great place for walking and boating, and safe bathing in the clear sea.
But if you like to have some nightlife on your holiday, Bryher is NOT really the place to come, as, there is none.
There is one hotel...Hell Bay Hotel, and 2 guest houses...'Bank Cottage', and 'Soleil d’Or'.
Also there are many self catering cottages and a campsite.
Near to the campsite, is a Post Office/ general stores, with a small range of supplies.
On my first visit, I stayed at Bank Cottage, and it was excellent.
Comfortable, friendly, excellent cuisine and beautiful surroundings. Visitors return, year after year, so booking accomodation at Bank Cottage should be done well in advance.
On my second visit, I stayed at the Soleil d'Or.
This is also an excellent guest house, but only on a bed and breakfast basis, whereas, bank Cottage was half board. Full English breakfast was superb.
Evening meals can be eaten at the cafe or pub on Bryher.
