Coping with diabetes

Every person with diabetes has a
different experience and learns to cope in a different way. Your own
personal experience can be shared
in the forum. This section will provide you with information and tips
that help you to find your own way of coping with the disease.

How to cope with your feelings
Planning for the future
 |
Planning your care - Regular checkups should be made with your GP and your
community nurse. This will help you to keep a check on how well controlled
your condition is. When you find things difficult, DO discuss them with
family and friends, that is what they are there for. If you need
additional help (for example with shopping, getting dressed, bathing),
this can be arranged via your GP. |
 |
Planning your finances - This can again be discussed with your GP or your
local social services (click
here to locate your local UK council). |
 |
Planning your work - Tell your employer of your condition and any possible
symptoms that you may experience. You may also consider reducing your
hours if you find work particularly difficult to deal with. |

Day to day
 |
Structure your day - Plan your day and try to increase your daily activity
levels (after discussing this with your doctor). If possible you may like
to take up some new hobbies or join local community groups. |
 |
If
you live alone always ask for help from your GP or community nurse if you
feel that you need additional support. They will be able to guide you. |

How
to cope with your feelings
Many
patients will find that this disease has a profound effect on
their feelings and this may cause many emotions to surface including anger,
frustration, loneliness, sadness, depression, confusion and so on. First of
all you should not be ashamed of these feelings as they are a natural
reaction whenever we experience a life-changing event. You should discuss
and explore these feelings with trusted friends and family, and even within
local community groups. You can even discuss these
in the forum! Throughout all this you should take some comfort in the
fact that you are not alone, there are many people available who are willing
to help and listen.
