What to look for when buying a
horse
The number 1 thing to look for when buying a horse
is temperament.
It comes before breed, colour, height, or anything else.
Horses have a good temperament when they:
Are happy and friendly when around people.
Are happy/easy to be caught.
Stand still while being groomed, saddled, and bridled.
Stand patiently while youare attempting to hop on and off their
back.
Don't mind you standing around while they are eating.
Horses have a bad temperament when they:
Put their ears back (on the ground and while being ridden).
Put their hind quarteres towards you.
Lift a hind leg, or attempt to kick or bite.
Are hard to catch.
Are hard to saddle, bridle, etc.
Are aggressive when being fed.
The horse should look clean, healthy and in good condition. Healthy
coat = healthy horse.
The hooves should be well trimmed or shod.
When inspecting the horse, you should see it being caught, groomed,
saddled, bridled, rugged, and ridden, and have a go at everything
yourself.
