You will need my fawn selections and the fawnfur.jpg.
Extract the selection files and the fawnfur.jpg to where ever you keep them and can find them :o)

The fur jpg was obtained here and colourised

OK, lets role up our sleeves and get creating.
I hope you like the lighten and darken aspect of the retouch tool as this tut uses it a lot :o)

1. Open an new image 380x300 with a transparent background. Open the fawnfur.jpg to set as the flood fill.

2. Add a new raster layer naming it body, Selections/load from disc, open the df_body.sel. Flood fill with the fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

3. Add a new raster layer naming it l leg. Go to selections/load from disc and open df_lleg.sel. Flood fill with the fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

4. Add a new raster layer naming it l hoof. Go to selections/load from disc and open df_lhoof.sel. Flood fill with black. Selections/select none.

5. Add a new raster layer naming it l leg front. Go to selections/load from disc and open df_llegf.sel. Flood fill with the fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

6. Add a new raster layer naming it r hoof. Go to selections/load from disc and open df_rhoof.sel. Flood fill with black. Selections/select none.

7. Add a new raster layer naming it r leg. Go to selections/load from disc and open df_rleg.sel. Flood fill with the fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

8. Add a new raster layer naming it l inner ear. Go to selections/load from disc and open df_linnerear.sel.  Flood fill with fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

9. Add a new raster layer naming it l ear. Go to selections/load from disc and open df_lear.sel. Flood fill with fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

10. Add a new raster layer naming it r ear. Go to Selections/load from disc and open the df_rear.sel. Flood fill with fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

11. Add a new raster layer naming it head. Go to Selections/load from disc and open the df_head.sel. Flood fill with fawnfur.jpg. Selections/select none.

12. Add a new raster layer naming it nose. Go to Selections/load from disc and open the df_nose.sel. Flood fill with black. Selections/select none. Effects/3Deffects/Inner bevel, use the round preset but change the light angle to 328.

13. Add a new raster layer naming it eyes. Go to Selections/load from disc and open the df_eyes.sel. Flood fill with black. Selections/select none. Selections/select none. Effects/3Deffects/Inner bevel, use the same settings as for the nose.

14. Add a new raster layer naming it lashes. Go to Selections/load from disc and open the df_lashes.sel. Flood fill with black. Selections/select none.

15. OK, now for the artistic bit :o) When I use the retouch tool I use a sweeping brush stroke gradually building up the effect. In the layer palette, right click the head layer, in the menu scroll down to view/current only. Now click on the glasses on the eyes, nose and lashes layer to bring back into view. We are now going to shade the face, magnify your image and with the retouch tool at these settings lighten and darken the face.

In the layer palette, click on the glasses of the r ear layer to bring into view, with the retouch tool lighten the right side and darken the left side. Now bring the l ear into view and lighten the edge. Bring the l inner ear into view and darken. Here's what I've got so far

16. The next thing I did was to bring the body and r leg into view and did a bit more shading on the body.

Bring the l leg and l leg front layers into view, darken the crook of the elbow on the l leg layer, lighten the top. Lighten the l leg front being careful not to go too near the knee otherwise it will look skeletal. Lets compare shall we?

17. We now need to use the retouch tool set to smudge, don't worry, there's not too much, just basically the ears, the top of the head, his bottom, and his legs where they join to the hooves *sigh* At this point I usually create a new layer at the very bottom and flood fill with a contrasting colour so that I can see how far I am pulling out the fur.

Very nearly done, click on the body layer, create a new layer, selections/load from disc, open the df_furdetail and flood fill with white. If you made a contrasting coloured layer click the glasses to make invisible, merge visible layer and with the retouch tool at the following settings soften the entire image.

And there you have it, one baby deer, isn't he a dear :o

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial, if you haven't already done them the Doe and Buck are waiting for you.
