This tutorial was written as a tribute to Jasper, our beloved Westie :o)

I came across a great tut site offering some smudge tutorials which gave me the idea to write this one. If you have time visit Doneta's great site :o)

You will need my westie selections, download here
and my fur jpg, download here

OK, lets role up our sleeves and get creating.

1. Open an new image 300x400 with a transparent background.

2. Add a new raster layer naming it body. Go to selections/load from disc and open westiebod.sel. Flood fill with the fur.jpg. Selections/select none.

3. Add a new raster layer naming it legs. Go to selections/load from disc and open westielegs.sel. Flood fill with the fur.jpg. Selections/select none.

4. Add a new raster layer naming it ears. Go to selections/load from disc and open westieears.sel. Flood fill with the fur.jpg. Selections/select none.

5. Add a new raster layer naming it mouth. Go to selections/load from disc and open westiemouth.sel. Flood fill with the fur.jpg. Selections/select none.

6. Add a new raster layer naming it tongue. Go to selections/load from disc and open westietongue.sel. Flood fill with a pink colour, I used #D48E8C. Using the retouch tool set to darken RGB and use these settings.

Darken the top of the tongue and then reduce the size of the brush to 2 and make a line down the middle of the tongue. Change the retouch tool to lighten RGB with these settings

Lighten the right and left hand sides and to the side of the darkened line. Change the retouch tool to soften with these settings

Soften the tongue. Selections/select none.

7. Add a new raster layer naming it head. Go to selections/load from disc and open westiehead.sel. Flood fill with the fur.jpg. Selections/select none.

8. Add a new raster layer naming it eyes. Go to selections/load from disc and open westieeyes.sel. Flood fill with black. Go to effect/3d effects/inner bevel and apply the round preset. Selections/select none. With the retouch tool set to soften with the same settings as before but reducing the brush size to 5, magnify your image and soften the edges of the eyes.

9. Add a new raster layer naming it nose. Go to selections/load from disc and open westienose.sel. Flood fill with black. Selections/select none.

10. Add a new raster layer naming it nostril. Go to selections/load from disc and open westienostrils.sel. Flood fill with black. Click on your nose layer and hit delete. Selections/select none. Go to effects/3d effects/inner bevel and apply the round preset changing the light angle to 345. With the retouch tool set to soften with the same settings as before but reducing the brush size to 5, magnify your image and soften the edges of the nose.

This is what your image should look like. Not much I know but that will soon change.

11. Click on the body layer to make it active. Use the retouch tool to darken RGB at the same settings as before but changing the brush size to 15 darken the areas either side of the legs. Change the retouch tool to soften, using the same settings but changing the brush size to 15 soften the areas you have darken. Now click on the leg layer and darken the inside and the top of the legs with the retouch tool. Change the retouch tool to lighten RGB with the same settings, brush size 15 and lighten the top of the legs shape and the outside of the legs. When you are done change the retouch tool to soften and soften the lighter and darker areas. Now click on the mouth layer and darken the entire area, softening when you have finished. Click on the head layer and darken the outside of the eyes. Change the retouch tool to lighten RGB and lighten the top and outside of the head soften all the changes areas when you are done. Click the ear layer and darken the inside of the ears, soften the entire ear even the outer edges. Here is a screen shot of what I have so far.

Pretty, aint he...........LOL

12. OK, now we start to smudge the fur. I have seen tuts where you merge all the visible layers and then use the smudge tool but I found it easier to work on all the individual layers. Change the retouch tool to smudge with these settings

Starting on the legs layer pull the fur about. Don't worry about trying to be neat, whenever have you seen a truly neat Westie apart from at a dog show *s* When you are happy with the legs move on to the body. It may be helpful to create a new layer at the very bottom and flood fill with black so that you can see exactly what you are doing. Then smudge the mouth and the head layers. Don't forget when you are manipulating the fur on the head that Westie's have a natural parting on their nose and that they have eye brows. OK, when you are happy with your Westie, turn off the coloured layer if you made one and merge visible. Change the size of the retouch tool to 2, magnify your image and pull some small strands of fur over the eyes.

And there you have one handsome Westie.
