PSP7 Knitted Teddy
By doing this tutorial you agree
to my
terms
of use.
For this tutorial you
will need - PSP 7
and a good general knowledge of PSP and vectors, this
is not for a novice, and this fill, right click and
save as.

Yours will have your own individual look as you
will be doing all the drawing. Do not expect to get an
exact copy as we all have our own style of drawing.
|
Here is a key to the short cuts used
Ctrl+A = Select all
Ctrl+F = Floats selection
Ctrl+Shft+F = Defloats selection
Ctrl+D = Select none
Ctrl+C = Copy
Ctrl+L = Pastes as new layer
| 1. Open the
knit-fill.jpg to use as the pattern fill. Null the foreground.
Set the background to pattern fill. With the paint dropper
click on the background pattern. A pattern dialogue box will
open.
Click on the drop down arrow to open up the pattern palette,
scroll to the top and select the knit-fill. Use a at a scale
of 100%, angle 0.
Open a new image 200x200. Flood fill with the knit-fill.
Effects - Geometric Effects - Circle. Crtl+A, Crtl+F,
selections - modify - contract by 25. Ctrl+C to copy. We are
going to use this for the teddy's head. Ctrl+D.
Keep this image open as we are going to use it again. |
|
| 2. Open a new
image 350x450. Ctrl+L, this will paste the selection you
just made as a new layer. Rename this layer head. Move the head to the top of the
canvas, leaving a gap so you have room for his ears. |
|
3. Go back to
the circular image. With the selection tool
circle, feather 0, antialias checked, make a small selection
towards the top as shown. Ctrl+C. Go back to your teddy image.
Ctrl+L. Rename the layer to ear. Move the ear to the left side
of the head. Layer - Arrange - Move down. Image - Rotate to
the left by 45 degrees. Duplicate the ear layer. Image -
Mirror. Move the right ear into place. Make the head layer
active. |
|
Using the magic wand
click the surrounding area of the head, selections - invert.
You should now have the marching ants around the head. Go to
one of the ear layers and hit delete. Do the same for the
other ear layer. You shouldn't see any
difference to your image.
|
4. Create a new
vector layer named body. With the preset shapes tool
ellipse, antialias and vector checked draw out on oval shape.
Click the object selector
right click the shape and choose node edit from the menu. Add
a node below the left and right nodes. Pull them in a tad.
Click the bottom node and pull out the control arms out. |
|
| 5. Create a new layer named leg. With the preset shape tool at the same settings draw
out an oval. Rotate slightly to the right. Add a node to
the right of the top node. Move this down and to the right.
Play with the control arms, lengthening or shortening to give
the leg some shape. Telling you exactly what I did is not easy
so hopefully this screen shot will help.
This screen shot does not show the body because it shows the
individual nodes more clearly. |
 |
| 6. Layers -
Duplicate. Image - Mirror. Rotate the leg slightly to the
right and play the nodes if you feel the need.

|
| 7. Create a new layer named
arm. Use the preset shape tool to draw out an oval. rotate
it round slightly to the left. Edit the nodes. All I did at
this point was to lengthen the control arms of the nodes
shown. Layers - Duplicate. Image - Mirror. Rotate the arm down
and alter the nodes if you wish. |
 |
|
This is what you should have so far.
If you are happy with the look of your teddy
convert the vector layers to raster. We are now going to work
our way through the layers colouring and giving each part some
shape.
|
8. Make the head
layer active. Crtl+A, Ctrl+F, Ctrl+Shft+F. Effects - Geometric
Effects - Cylinder Vertical at 25%. Ctrl+D. In the layer
palette, lock
the
transparency of the layer. Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout at
the settings shown. Colours - Colourise. Play with the hue and
saturation to give any colour you wish. Unlock
the transparency of the layer.
|
|
Cutout
Vertical -3
Horizontal 3
Opacity 100
Blur 30
Colour Black |
| 9. Repeat step
8 for the legs, arms and body. You may
need to use Cylinder Horizontal for the arms, depending on
their angle. For the ears do
not apply the geometric effect and change the blur of the
cutout to 20. Change the horizontal of the cutout to -3 for
the left ear.
|
| 10.
Ok, lets give him a face, we'll start with the eyes. Open a new image 100x100. create a
new layer named button. Null the
foreground and set the background to a colour that compliments
the colour of your teddy. With the preset shape tool, ellipse,
antialias checked. Start at the top left hand corner, hold
Shft and draw out a circle. Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel
at the shown settings. Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F, Ctrl+Shft+F, selections
- modify - contract by 15. Apply the inner bevel again but
change the angle to 135. Ctrl+D.
|
 |
| Duplicate
the layer. Image - Resize by 13%, unchecked all layers.
Duplicate this resized layer 3 times. These are going to make
the holes so move them into place as shown. Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F,
Ctrl+Shft+F. Make the button layer active, delete. Repeat this
for all the duplicated layers. Delete all the duplicated
layers, you should now just have your button complete with
holes. |
|
11. Create a new
layer. Set the foreground to black, null the background. With
the draw tool
freehand line, width 4, antialias checked, draw a cross so
that it overlaps the holes. Make the button layer active.
Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F, Ctrl+Shft+F. make the cross layer active, with the eraser
get rid of the overlapping thread. Ctrl+D. Marge layers
visible. Resize all layers by 30%. Copy. Go to your teddy
image and paste as new layer. Move the button to use as one of
his eyes. Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow at the shown
setting. Duplicate the layer and move into place. |
Drop Shadow
V & H 1
Opacity 100
Blur 5
Colour Black
|
| 12.
Create a new layer. With the freehand draw tool as before draw
in his smile and then about 3 lines for his nose. Apply the
same drop shadow as before. Merge all layers visible and
you're done. |
 |
Teddies come in all sorts of shapes and sizes
and I hope this tut has given you the inspiration to come up with
your very own version.
