Screen shots were taken from PSP7 and KPT ShapeShifter and as such are covered by their own copyright.

For this tutorial you will need PSP7 and KPT5
also my ShapeShifter and FibreOptix presets and the tubes
Extract the mirror preset to your KPT5/Presets/ShapeShifter folder, the brush preset to your KPT5/Presets/FibreOptix folder and the tubes to where ever you keep them.

Mirror

Browse your hard drive and open my mirror_gold.tub, CTRL+D to open a copy and close the original. With the magic wand click on the inside of the mirror, Selections/Modify/Expand by 2. While still selected create a new layer, in the layer palette click on it and drag it down to the bottom, flood fill with #B1AFAF, Selections/Float. Go to Effects/Plugin filters/KPT5/KPT5 ShapeShifter and apply my mirror preset, using Cool Kitchen as your environment. In the layer palette right click the floating selection and promote to layer. In the layer palette bring the opacity down to 50%, and merge visible. Save as a tube or as a PSP file.

Brush

Browse your hard drive and open my brush.tub, CTRL+D to open a copy and close the original. Go to Image/Canvas size and change the size as follows -

With the magic wand click the inside of the brush, Selections/Modify/Expand by 2. While still selected create a new layer, in the layer palette click on it and drag it down below layer1, flood fill with #BAA4A0. Go to Effects/3D effects/Inner bevel, apply the pillow preset but change the elevation to 30. Selections/Modify/Contract by 4, create a new layer and in the layer palette drag it to the top, flood fill with #907856, Selections/Float. Effects/Plugin Filters/KPT5/KPT5 FibreOptix, apply my brush preset. You will need to change the gradient to the following built in preset -

Selections/Select none. Because the bristles of a brush tend to fan out a tad we will need to use the deformation tool. Hold down CTRL and pull out the top corner and drag in the bottom corner just a tad. Effects/Sharpen, merge all layers visible. Now save as a tube or in PSP format.

Comb

Mahogany has an excellent hair care tut which is where I found out how to make the comb, just made a few changes. Her site no longer seems to be on the web and I have been asked how I made the comb, so here is my variation on Mahogany's tut.

You will need my tortoise shell gradient
PSP7 gradient here - extract the jgd file to C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\Gradients folder
PSP8 gradient here - extract the pspgradient file to C:\My Documents\My PSP8 Files\Gradients folder

For this tut I used PSP7 but have included instruction for PSP8 where necessary and short cut keys rather than going through the menu for certain functions.

1. Open a new image with a transparent background 550 x 150. Create a new vector layer, name it base1. With the preset shapes tool (8 = ), rectangle, antialias and create as vector checked, line width 1, #1 solid. In the colour pallet set the foreground to #00000 and the background to #404040. In the style pallet null the stroke and set the fill to #Foreground-Background gradient at an angle of 107 and a repeat of 1. Starting from the top left, draw out a rectangle.

PSP7 - use the object selector to edit the nodes. Right click on the rectangle, choose node edit from the menu.

PSP8 - use the pen tool edit mode to edit the nodes.

Move in the bottom left node slightly, Ctrl+2 to curve after. Move the control arm up and out a tad to curve the side of the comb. Move in the bottom right node, Ctrl+1 to curve before. Move the control arm up and out a tad to curve the side of the comb. With the curser on the bottom line, hold Ctrl and click to add a node. Add 2 nodes to the bottom right and 2 to the bottom left.

Move up the inner most left node. Ctrl+1. Move the control arm down a tad. Move up the inner most right node. Ctrl+2. Move down the control arm.

Click on the top left node. Ctrl+S. Shorten the control arms. Repeat for the top right node.

Place the curser at the top/middle. Hold Ctrl to add a node. Move this node up slightly.

You should now have the basic outline of the comb.

2. Duplicate the layer. Rename the layer to base3. Ctrl+D. With the object selector click on the shape, edit the nodes (PSP8 - pen tool, edit mode) Add a node below the upper left node (PSP8 - you will need to click on the added node to select it). Ctrl+L. Click on the bottom left node, hold Shft, click the one next to it and the one above that (see screen shot). Ctrl+M. Repeat for the other side.

In the layer pallet click on the + sign next to base3, double click the rectangle layer to bring up the vector properties dialogue box. Change the colour of the fill to white. With the preset shapes tool move out the sides to make wider.

3. Make the base1 layer active. Duplicate the layer. Rename to base2. Open the vector properties dialogue box as before and change the gradient fill to the tortoise shell gradient with an angle of 122 and a repeat of 1.

Convert all the base layers to raster.

4. Make base1 layer active. Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel at the setting given.

In the layer pallet change the blend mode of base2 to dodge.

In the layer pallet make it so that base1 and base2 are visible ( PSP8), merge layers visible. Rename to base1. Bring all layers in to view.

5. With the preset shapes tool at the same setting and fill as in step 1 but change the angle of the gradient to 90, repeats 1. Create a new vector layer named teeth. Layers, Arrange, Move Down so that it is the bottom most layer. Draw a long narrow rectangle near the left inside edge of the comb. Hold the curser over one of the bottom edges, hold Ctrl and move in slightly to taper the bottom edge.

Ctrl+C to copy. Ctrl+G to paste as a new vector selection.

The outline of the shape will appear, just move it into place, as you click the left button of your mouse the vector shape will be placed.

Place it next to the tooth we just made. Ctrl+G and place that next to the one just pasted. Repeat this until you get half way along the comb. Don't worry too much about whether they line up vertically just try to space them evenly. When you have as many as you need Ctrl+A, Objects, Align, Bottom, this will even them out vertically. While they are all still selected you can move them all as a group in to place if needed. Crtl+D.

6. Convert the teeth layer to raster. Duplicate the layer and rename to teeth2. Crtl+A. Crtl+F. Shft+Crtl+F. Flood fill with the tortoiseshell gradient at an angle of 122, repeats 1. Ctrl+D. Change the blend mode of teeth2 layer to dodge.

In the layer pallet make it so that the 2 teeth layers are visible. Merge layers visible. Rename to teeth. Bring the other layers in to view.

7. Duplicate the teeth layer. Rename to teeth small. With the deformation tool move them to the other side of the teeth then narrow them down to make thinner. Duplicate the teeth small layer and move to fill in the gap. You will have some teeth overhanging the right edge, with the eraser get rid of them.

8. Make the base3 layer active and apply a Blade Pro preset or effect of your choice.

Merge all layers visible and save as a tube or in PSP format.
