PSP8 Floating Candles

This tutorial has been written for PSP8 but will work just as well in PSP7.

I don't know about you guys but I love my candles and after writing the tutorial for the glass bowl and making the candles to go in it I thought mmmm, twas like a little light bulb suddenly lighting. So this is how I made them :o) It's hopefully easy and won't have you pulling out your hair *s*

1. Open a new image 200x200. Create a new layer. Null the foreground and set the background to what ever strikes your fancy. Use the preset shapes tool star 4, antialias and vector checked, hold Shft and draw out your star. With the pen tool , edit mode , double click one of the nodes. Ctrl+S, this will take away all the sharp edges. Now go round and pull out all the inner nodes.

Click on the preset shapes tool to select the shape. Push up from the bottom to narrow down the shape. Click on one of the top corners, hold Ctrl and drag the top in slightly. If needs be, move your star down the canvas so that it is central.

Duplicate the layer.

2. In the layer palette, click the plus sign on the Vector 1 layer. Double click Star 4 to open the vector properties box. Click on the fill and darken the colour by using the slider of the L value.

Still with the preset shapes tool, bring the darkened star down. Bring in each side of the star making in smaller than the original.

Covert each layer to raster. Rename the top layer to candle top. Rename the next layer down to candle bottom.

3. With the candle bottom layer active, create a new raster layer named front. Swap the foreground and background over. With the pen tool, create new, this needs to be clicked for each line otherwise the next line you draw will connect to the previous, draw a line connecting the front bottom right................this is hard to put into words................draw 2 lines as shown, remember to click new shape before drawing the second line.

4. Make the candle bottom layer active. Ctrl+A. Ctrl+F. Ctrl+Shft+F. Make the front layer active. With the paint brush size 10, round, hardness 25, step 25, density 100, thickness 100, opacity 100, blend normal, paint the inside of the front as shown, being careful not to go over the lines you have just drawn.

5. Still with the selection. Make the candle bottom layer active. Create a new layer named left side. With the draw tool at the same settings, new line, draw a line connecting the side corners. Click on the selection tool and hey presto, your selection is back. With the paint brush, paint in the gap. At this point you can only paint within the selection. Ctrl+D and fill in the gap, being careful not to go over the line.

6. Make the candle bottom layer active. Ctrl+A. Ctrl+F. Crtl+Shft+F. Create a new layer named right side. Repeat the line draw and painting as for the left side. Ctrl+D.

You can now delete the candle bottom layer.

7. Make the front layer active. With the freehand selection tool , point to point, replace, feather 10, make a rectangular selection of the front, wider at the top. The screen shot shows the selection without feathering for your guidance. Adjust - Brightness and Contrast - Brightness/Contrast, brightness -40 contrast 0 . Ctrl+D. In the layer palette, lock the transparency of the layer. Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout, vertical & horizontal -2, opacity 100, blur 20, for the colour use the dropper and select the darker shade of the brightness adjustment we made previously. Unlock the transparency of the layer.

8. Make the left side layer active. With the freehand selection tool, same settings as before, make a rectangular selection as shown, pictured without the feathering, the right edge needs to be close to the side edge of the front. Adjust the brightness and contrast as before. Repeat this for the right side.

9. Make the candle top layer active. With the selection tool ellipse, replace, feather 0, antialias checked, start at the center of the candle top and make an oval selection as shown. Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel, apply the following setting.

Selections - Modify - Contract by 1. Selections - Invert. Apply the Inner Bevel changing the smoothness to 40 and the angle to 308.

10. Create a new layer. With the picture tube , use the rope tube at a scale of 50, draw the wick from bottom to top. Create a new layer, use the flame tube at a scale of roughly 25.

There you have your candle. Merge layers visible and save as a tube or in PSP Format. Want to know how to give it a lighting effect? Step this way.......

To give you an idea how this is done, create a new layer, send it to the bottom flood fill with a colour, merge layers visible. Effects - Illumination Effects - Lights. Select the 1 Up preset and change the settings as shown. The vertical and horizontal need to match your image and where it is on your canvas, this can be done by moving the light in the left hand window. You will need to add a light for each candle you have in your image and move the light into position giving it the same properties. Use the proof tool to see the effect on your image before applying. Leave the other settings as they are or have a play. Change the cone size, intensity, colour, just play with the settings to see how it affects the image.
