1. Open a new image 450x250
with a transparent background. Set the foreground colour to #C1C1C1,
null the background/fill. With the selection tool, rectangle,
add, feather 0, antialias checked. Draw out a rectangular
selection approximately 402x146 starting approximately a third
of the way down the canvas. look at the
figures at the bottom right of your work area
Selections, modify, expand by 5. Flood fill with the
light grey. Ctrl+D.

With the selection tool select a narrow length
of the left and right hand sides, and an even narrower strip at
the bottom, as shown.
PSP7 users - The selection
tool settings are really the same. Select a narrow length of the
right hand side, hold shift and make a matching selection the
other side and then the bottom. As long as you hold shift while
making the selection you will end up with a selection as shown.

Selections, modify, feather by 25. Adjust,
Brightness & Contrast, Brightness/Contrast, brightness -70,
contrast 0. Ctrl+D. With the selection tool select a small part of the
top as shown.
Selections, modify, feather by 25. Adjust,
Brightness & Contrast, Brightness/Contrast, brightness 40,
contrast 0. Ctrl+D.
3. With the selection tool, starting about
2/3 down select a narrow section. Crtl+F, Shft+Ctrl+F.

Effects, 3D Effects, Cutout, vertical 10,
horizontal 0, opacity 100, blur 20, shadow colour #8A8A8A, fill
colour #DBDBDB. Crtl+D.
4. Create a new raster layer and drag it
to the bottom. Set the foreground colour to #313131, background
#EFEFEF. Null the foreground/stroke, set the background/fill the
gradient, foreground/background, angle 90, repeats 1, linear.
With the preset shapes tool, rectangle, antialias checked, draw
a leg at the bottom of the unit. Duplicate this layer and move
to the other side.

5. With the preset shapes tool,
rectangle, antialias & vector checked, background/fill set
to #8E8E8E. Draw out a rectangle for the top of the unit,
matching the width of the unit. While holding control, drag in
the top outer node to give the top of the unit some perspective.
It may be helpful to magnify the image
so that the width of the top matches that of the front . When happy with the top of the unit convert to
raster layer. This is your base unit, merge visible and rename
the layer to base. Save this as a PSP file or tube for future
use. Shft+D to open a duplicate image, close the original.

Ok, lets put some controls onto the unit.
6. Making the knob. Set the foreground colour to #EDEDED, background to
#7A7A7A, null the foreground/stroke and set the background/fill
to gradient fill, angle 0, repeats 0, linear. With the preset
shapes tool, ellipse, vector & antialias checked. Hold Shft
and draw out a circle on the right hand side of the unit.
Convert to raster. Adjust, Blur, Gaussian Blur with a radius of
1.
7. Change the background/fill to colour. Draw out
another circle, on top and smaller than the gradient circle.
Convert to raster layer. Effects, 3D Effects, Cutout. Vertical
& horizontal 0, opacity 100, blur 15, shadow colour #EBE9E9,
fill colour #7A7A7A. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow, vertical
& horizontal 1, opacity 100, blur 4, shadow colour black.
Foreground #740A0A, use the paintbrush, round, size 6, hardness
50, step 10, density 100, thickness 100, rotation 0, opacity
100, blend mode normal. Paint a dot onto the knob. By
using the visibility toggle in the layer palette make the base
unit invisible, merge visible and rename this layer knob. Copy
and paste as a new image, save as tube for future use. Bring
the unit layer back into view.

8. Making the
display. Create a new layer. With the selection
tool, rounded rectangle, antialias checked, draw out a long
rectangle for the display window, fill with the same
foreground/background gradient fill as used in the vector shape
for the knob. Create a new layer. Selections, Modify, contract
by 7, flood fill with #2C2C2C. Create a new layer. Selections,
Modify, contract by 5, flood fill with #C9FBE5. Ctrl+D. Going
through the layers for the display, apply a gaussian blur of .50
to the green and dark grey layer and 1.00 to the gradient layer.
Make the base and knob layer invisible, merge visible. Rename
display. Copy and paste as a new image, save as tube for future
use. Bring all layers back in to view.

9. Making the switch. Create a new vector layer called switch. Foreground
colour #5D5D5D, background #E7E7E7. With the preset shapes tool,
rounded rectangle, antialias & vector checked. Null the
foreground/stroke, set the background/fill to gradient, linear,
foreground/background, angle 90, repeats 1. Draw out a narrow
button to the left in the cutout part of the unit. Convert to
raster. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow. Vertical &
horizontal 1, opacity 100, blur 1, colour black. Copy and paste
as a new image, save as tube for future use.
10. Create a new layer called sensor.
Null the foreground, background/fill #2C2C2C. With the preset shapes tool, rectangle, antialias
checked, draw out a narrow rectangle.

11. Make the base layer active, with the selection tool, rectangle,
add, feather 0, antialias checked, draw out a rectangle slightly
narrower than the part of the unit below the groove.

Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow, vertical &
horizontal 1, opacity 20, blur 2, colour #2C2C2C. Effects, 3D
Effects, Inner Bevel, apply the unit 1 preset. Crtl+D.
12. Making the buttons.
Create a new layer named button. Null
the foreground, background/fill #7A7A7A. With the preset shapes
tool, ellipse, antialias checked, hold Shft and draw out a small
circle. Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel, apply the unit preset. Copy and paste
as a new image, save as tube for future use. Duplicate the
button layer 3 times and space out evenly on the left hand side.

Merge layers visible and there you have the
radio unit. It is up to you if you wish to make further
embellishments such as text and time display.
