This tutorial has been written for PSP8 but it can be done in PSP7. It is a representation of my pride and joy.

By doing this tutorial you agree to my terms of use.

Screen shots were taken from PSP8 and as such copyright belongs to JASC.

You will need my presets, here. Unzip to My Documents/My PSP8 Files/Presets.
PSP7 users here, unzip to program files/PSP7/Presets

Remember to save often, I am not in the habit of making this reminder.

1. Open a new image 450x250 with a transparent background. Set the foreground colour to #C1C1C1, null the background/fill. With the selection tool, rectangle, add, feather 0, antialias checked. Draw out a rectangular selection approximately 402x146 starting approximately a third of the way down the canvas. look at the figures at the bottom right of your work area Selections, modify, expand by 5. Flood fill with the light grey. Ctrl+D.

2. With the selection tool select a narrow length of the left and right hand sides, and an even narrower strip at the bottom, as shown.

PSP7 users - The selection tool settings are really the same. Select a narrow length of the right hand side, hold shift and make a matching selection the other side and then the bottom. As long as you hold shift while making the selection you will end up with a selection as shown.

Selections, modify, feather by 25. Adjust, Brightness & Contrast, Brightness/Contrast, brightness -70, contrast 0. Ctrl+D. With the selection tool select a small part of the top as shown.

Selections, modify, feather by 25. Adjust, Brightness & Contrast, Brightness/Contrast, brightness 40, contrast 0. Ctrl+D.

3. With the selection tool, starting about 2/3 down select a narrow section. Crtl+F, Shft+Ctrl+F.

Effects, 3D Effects, Cutout, vertical 10, horizontal 0, opacity 100, blur 20, shadow colour #8A8A8A, fill colour #DBDBDB. Crtl+D.

4. Create a new raster layer and drag it to the bottom. Set the foreground colour to #313131, background #EFEFEF. Null the foreground/stroke, set the background/fill the gradient, foreground/background, angle 90, repeats 1, linear. With the preset shapes tool, rectangle, antialias checked, draw a leg at the bottom of the unit. Duplicate this layer and move to the other side.

5. With the preset shapes tool, rectangle, antialias & vector checked, background/fill set to #8E8E8E. Draw out a rectangle for the top of the unit, matching the width of the unit. While holding control, drag in the top outer node to give the top of the unit some perspective. It may be helpful to magnify the image so that the width of the top matches that of the front . When happy with the top of the unit convert to raster layer. This is your base unit, merge visible and rename the layer to base. Save this as a PSP file or tube for future use. Shft+D to open a duplicate image, close the original.

Ok, lets put some controls onto the unit.

6. Making the knob. Set the foreground colour to #EDEDED, background to #7A7A7A, null the foreground/stroke and set the background/fill to gradient fill, angle 0, repeats 0, linear. With the preset shapes tool, ellipse, vector & antialias checked. Hold Shft and draw out a circle on the right hand side of the unit. Convert to raster. Adjust, Blur, Gaussian Blur with a radius of 1.

7. Change the background/fill to colour. Draw out another circle, on top and smaller than the gradient circle. Convert to raster layer. Effects, 3D Effects, Cutout. Vertical & horizontal 0, opacity 100, blur 15, shadow colour #EBE9E9, fill colour #7A7A7A. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow, vertical & horizontal 1, opacity 100, blur 4, shadow colour black. Foreground #740A0A, use the paintbrush, round, size 6, hardness 50, step 10, density 100, thickness 100, rotation 0, opacity 100, blend mode normal. Paint a dot onto the knob. By using the visibility toggle in the layer palette make the base unit invisible, merge visible and rename this layer knob. Copy and paste as a new image, save as tube for future use. Bring the unit layer back into view.

8. Making the display. Create a new layer. With the selection tool, rounded rectangle, antialias checked, draw out a long rectangle for the display window, fill with the same foreground/background gradient fill as used in the vector shape for the knob. Create a new layer. Selections, Modify, contract by 7, flood fill with #2C2C2C. Create a new layer. Selections, Modify, contract by 5, flood fill with #C9FBE5. Ctrl+D. Going through the layers for the display, apply a gaussian blur of .50 to the green and dark grey layer and 1.00 to the gradient layer. Make the base and knob layer invisible, merge visible. Rename display. Copy and paste as a new image, save as tube for future use. Bring all layers back in to view.

9. Making the switch. Create a new vector layer called switch. Foreground colour #5D5D5D, background #E7E7E7. With the preset shapes tool, rounded rectangle, antialias & vector checked. Null the foreground/stroke, set the background/fill to gradient, linear, foreground/background, angle 90, repeats 1. Draw out a narrow button to the left in the cutout part of the unit. Convert to raster. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow. Vertical & horizontal 1, opacity 100, blur 1, colour black. Copy and paste as a new image, save as tube for future use.

11. Make the base layer active, with the selection tool, rectangle, add, feather 0, antialias checked, draw out a rectangle slightly narrower than the part of the unit below the groove.

Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow, vertical & horizontal 1, opacity 20, blur 2, colour #2C2C2C. Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel, apply the unit 1 preset. Crtl+D.

12. Making the buttons. Create a new layer named button. Null the foreground, background/fill #7A7A7A. With the preset shapes tool, ellipse, antialias checked, hold Shft and draw out a small circle. Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel, apply the unit preset. Copy and paste as a new image, save as tube for future use. Duplicate the button layer 3 times and space out evenly on the left hand side.

Merge layers visible and there you have the radio unit. It is up to you if you wish to make further embellishments such as text and time display.

Shall we continue to the disc player and amp?
