PSP8 Piggy Bank

This tutorial has been written for PSP8 but will also work in PSP7.

For this tutorial you'll need a basic knowledge of PSP and vector shapes.

If it helps you can save this image to your hard drive to use it as a template or simply for guidance.

You can, of course, use your own colours, for the purpose of this tutorial,
I will give the colours I used.

1. Open a new image 200x200, 16 million colours with a transparent background. Null the foreground and set the background to pink, I used #F5C3D1. Create a new vector layer named body. With the preset shape tool, ellipse, antialias and vector checked draw out a round body.

2. Make layer raster 1 active. Create a new vector layer named leg1. With the preset shape tool, rectangle, draw out a square leg toward the left side of the body. With the pen tool edit the nodes. Double click one of the nodes, while they are all selected press Ctrl+1 then Ctrl+2, this will alter the lines to curves. Click away from the nodes to deselect.

(a) Bring the top left node in toward the body. (b) Bring the top right node down so that it is in line with the edge of the body and slightly to the right. (c) Lengthen the control arm of the bottom left node.

3. Duplicate leg1 layer. Image/Mirror. Move into place.

4. Make the body layer active. Create a new vector layer named leg3. Draw out a square for the leg toward the middle of the body. Edit the nodes. Double click one of the nodes, while they are all selected press Ctrl+1 then Ctrl+2. Click away from the nodes to deselect.

(a) Bring the bottom left and right nodes in slightly. (b) Bring the control arm of the bottom left and right nodes down slightly to give a round edge. (c) Bring the control arms of the top left and right nodes up slightly.

5. Make the copy of leg1 layer active. Create a new vector layer named left ear. With the preset shapes tool set to triangle, draw a triangle for the ear toward the left of the body. Rotate as shown.

Edit the nodes. Double click one of the nodes, (a) while they are all selected press Ctrl+S to make symmetrical. Click away from the nodes to deselect. (b) Bring the top right and bottom middle node in to line with the body moving the control arms if needs be.

6. Create a new vector layer named left ear inner. Change the background colour to #F6F4C4. Repeat step 5 to make a smaller triangle of roughly the same shape.

7. Duplicate the left ear layer. Rename to right ear. Image/Mirror. Layers/Arrange/Bring to the top. Move the ear in to place. It may help to make the body layer invisible so that you can see what you are doing.

Duplicate the left ear inner layer. Rename to right ear inner. Image/Mirror. Layers/Arrange/Bring to the top. Move the ear in to place.

8. Create a new layer named snout. With the preset shape tool, ellipse, draw a circle for the snout placing it so that it protrudes the body slightly.

Convert all layers to raster.

9. Make leg1 layer active. Effects/3D Effects/Cutout at the following setting.

10. Make copy of leg1 layer active. Apply the same cutout changing the Horizontal to 10.

11. Make leg3 layer active. Apply the cutout changing the Vertical to 0, Horizontal to 4.

12. Make the body layer active. Apply the cutout with a Vertical of -10, Horizontal of 1 and a blur of 40.

13. Duplicate the snout layer. Make the snout layer active. Apply the cutout with a Vertical of -12, Horizontal of 2 and a blur of 20.

14. Make the duplicate of snout layer active. Image/Resize at 80% smart size uncheck resize all layers. Adjust/Blur/Gaussian Blur with a radius of 2. Move this blurred snout so that it's left edge meets the left edge of the snout.

15. Make the left ear layer active. Apply the cutout the Vertical and Horizontal at 2 and the blur at 10.

Repeat for the right ear changing the Horizontal to -2.

Repeat the cutout for the right inner ear changing the fill colour to #F6F4C4.

Repeat the cutout for the left inner ear changing the Horizontal to 2.

16. OK, we need a coin slot. Make the body layer active. Create a new vector layer named slot. Null the foreground, set the background to #C3798E. With the preset shape tool draw a tall triangle. Edit the nodes. Click on the top node to select, Ctrl+1 and Ctrl+2. Bring the top node down and to the right. Move and extend the control arms as shown. Convert to raster layer.

17. Make the body layer active. Ctrl+A. Ctrl+F. Ctrl+Shft+I. Make the slot layer active. Delete. Ctrl+D. Effects/3D Effects/Cutout oat the following setting.

Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow, Vertical 1, Horizontal 0, Opacity 32, Blur 2, colour white.

18. Make the copy of leg layer active. Create a new layer. Null the background, set the foreground to #FDEDF2. With the paint brush , size 4, hardness 0, step 1, Density, Thickness and Opacity all at 100. Paint highlights as shown. Adjust/Blur/ Gaussian Blur at 2.50.

19. Make leg3 layer active. Create a new layer. Paint another highlight as shown and apply the same gaussian blur.

20. Make the right inner ear layer active. Create a new layer. Paint highlights on the ears and snout as shown. Apply the same gaussian blur.

21. Make the body layer active. Create a new layer. Change the foreground to #F8D4DE and paint a large highlight. Change the foreground to #FDEDF2 and paint inside the highlight as shown. Apply a gaussian blur of 5.

22. Make the copy of snout layer active. Create a new layer. Increase the size of the paint brush to 6. Click once to paint a nostril then make another. Apply a cutout with the following setting.

All you need do now is to give it some eyes on a new layer, merge visible and save in PSP format or as a tube.
