Co-director Chris Sanders does Stitch's voice, a sort of E.T. croak that he uses to annoy his fellow animators. Lilo partner Dean DeBlois' Boston terrier, Theodore, provided his slurps and snorts after snacking on peanut butter. Look for Dumbo, star of one of the last Disney cartoon features before Lilo to be done in watercolor (in 1941). Lilo was influenced by Japanese animé master Hayao Miyazaki ( My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Servic e ). Says DeBlois, "He creates genuine relationships in the realm of fantasy." Kiki's Coffee House is a tribute. When Lilo retrieves her doll and hugs it, it smiles. When Stitch hits his alien creator with a VW Beetle, the surfer on a poster looks shocked. The Mulan Wok eatery is a nod to the Disney film that Sanders and Dean DeBlois worked on previously. When Stitch says "Blue punch buggy," while holding aloft the VW, it refers to a road-trip game. Spy a Beetle, say the phrase, hit your seatmate's arm and declare, "No punch backs." The movie that Stitch watches on the television in the store window is 1958's Earth vs. the Spider . Stitch, a genetic mutant, is at first called Experiment 626 and his planet is named Turo. The references are completely random, the directors say. Some say that on Stitch's head, that mark is supposed to be an angel. This is because Lilo wishes for an angel before Stitch falls to earth. When Lilo comes into Nani's room one morning to show her that Stitch can play Elvis records, there is a close up of Nani looking astonished/freaked out. Over her shoulder, a "Mulan" poster is clearly visible on her wall. "Mulan" is written in yellow/gold letters and is inside of a red dragon. It is the exact logo that was used for Disney's Mulan. |
