This PPV was built around one match and the Elimination Chamber was awesome to watch, all 6 of those amazing athletes put their bodies through hell in the name of entertainment and I truly admire and respect each and every one of them. It seemed unfortunate that the first two matches of the night saw two athletes receive knee injuries, accidents happen in the ring, I don’t like to see it happen and I wish both Eugene and Lita speedy recoveries and hope to see them back on Raw soon. It made for a pretty strange night at the top of the show but fortunately, the Chamber more than made up for it even though I felt pretty depressed and flat at the end when we didn’t actually crown a new World Heavyweight Champion.
The fans in Puerto Rico were amazing all night long and were into absolutely everything, when you have a hot crowd like that it makes all the difference. Great job guys!
I really didn’t see the point in those poolside clips throughout the night, those Superstars “playing” around in the pool would have been better utilised in a match at the PPV. Most Wrestling fans watch the WWE to see Wrestling and once again the lingerie models featured too much for my liking. Maybe if the Creative Team concentrated more on actual Wrestling segments rather than trying to find ways of putting a Diva in every single segment and imitating Hugh Hefners Playboy Mansion each and every week then fans would stay interested throughout the whole show.
WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
EUGENE & WILLIAM REGAL vs. CHRISTIAN & TYSON TOMKO
I really enjoyed this opening match and thought all four Superstars worked well together and put on an entertaining match for the Tag Team titles. It was unfortunate that Eugene hurt his knee towards the end but he kept going on one leg to finish the match and get the pin fall for his team. Unfortunately, it appears that he will be out of action for a while so won’t be able to defend the Tag Team titles along with William Regal and I do wonder what they will now do with the titles. Will the WWE use the mandatory 30 day rule like they did with the IC title or will the Tag Team titles be forgotten about until Eugene returns?. While I love Eugene and William Regal as the Tag Team Champions.
I personally feel that they need to lose the belts for now and allow some new teams to fight over them. The Tag Team Division needs to be reawakened so to speak to make it interesting again and I couldn’t help but dream this week of seeing Benoit and Jericho winning those titles once more and having a run as the World Tag Team Champions. They sure as hell aren’t getting near the World Heavyweight Title picture and this will give fans, who aren’t particularly interested in seeing another Heavyweight title reign by “The Game”, something else to get interested in. Christian and Tyson Tomko are ideal candidates to take them on right now and then hopefully, heading into Wrestlemania we might possible (please) get to see a Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit singles match, okay, we get to see that next week on Raw but on the biggest stage of them all would be a spectacle to behold.
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
LITA (Champion) vs. TRISH STRATUS
I am not sure if Trish was actually supposed to win the title here or whether the WWE made a split second decision because of Lita’s injury. I was so looking forward to this match and I felt so sorry for Lita who must be extremely upset and frustrated right now to be injured once more and out of action. It was a real shame that this happened, but as I said at the start, accidents do happen in the ring through no one’s fault, its sad when it happens and I don’t like to see but it’s one of those unfortunate things. Like with Eugene, I wish Lita a speedy recovery.
INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP
SHELTON BENJAMIN vs. MAVEN
I found this very strange to say the least and the rumours are that the match was booked in this way because the WWE weren’t happy with how their matches played out at recent houseshows and in particular with Maven. If they didn’t feel that he was ready to go one on one at a PPV in a high profile match then why put him out there and waste the potential for a great match for the IC title. While Maven was awesome on the mic, he did a great job of getting heat from the fans, Shelton Benjamin was wasted being there. For Maven to lose two title matches in straight succession and then to lose the very next night on Raw to Shelton Benjamin in a qualifier Match for The Royal Rumble, it seems that the WWE are not very high right now on Maven. It’s a shame considering they were starting to give the character a new lease of life but that seems to have come to a crashing halt. As for the IC title picture, well its hard right now to see just who can step up to face Shelton Benjamin especially considering that Triple H is still dominating Raw. Even though he is not in the IC title picture, too much time on the show is given over to him and the other titles on Raw are beginning to suffer because of it.
MOHAMMAD HASSAN vs. JERRY “THE KING” LAWLER
I really couldn’t stay interested in this match as it seemed to go on and on but not actually getting anywhere. I love Jerry Lawler but seeing him in the ring against a young athlete like Mohammad Hassan these days isn’t entertaining. The lack of Commentary made this match seem even longer and I personally felt that Coach and Todd Grisham could have stepped in for JR and The King. The time it took Hassan to beat Lawler doesn’t bode too well for him either and he very nearly lost this match. Its still early days yet for Hassan but one thought did pop into my head during this match. Just imagine what a match would be like between him and Triple H with Ric Flair and Daivari at ringside - there would be more action ringside with Ric Flair and Daivari trying to interfere and shouting encouragement than in the ring. I really don’t think that my head could take it!
KANE & GENE SNITSKY
I enjoyed this match and Snitsky took a nasty back drop onto the concrete floor early on which must have hurt. This was a hard hitting and pretty brutal match which was to be expected considering the Storyline attached to it and it appears from the events on this week’s Raw that this feud is not yet over. In reality, though, what else if there for Snitsky to do on Raw!.
WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (VACATED TITLE)
ELIMINATION CHAMBER MATCH
CHRIS BENOIT vs. CHRIS JERICHO vs. EDGE vs. RANDY ORTON vs. BATISTA vs. TRIPLE H
I can’t say enough about this match and the 6 amazing athletes in it, each one of them brought something special to it and they all put their bodies through hell to make this one entertaining for the fans. You only had to look at Benoit and Jericho on Raw the next night to see just how much they went through and for that I thank them. They have my up most admiration and respect. The two MVP’s in this match, for me though, were Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit, they started off the match and I loved watching these two mixing it up and for me they were the true workhorses out there. They were in the Chamber the longest that’s for sure and did an amazing job. Kudos to both guys.
Its seems like a long time since we have seen these two go one on one and I can’t wait to see their match next week on Raw. I would love to see these two in action against one another at Wrestlemania and I am holding out hope that we will see a Storyline/feud develop between them heading into the PPV. They sure as hell aren’t involved in the World Heavyweight Title picture right now and a Storyline between them would be a nice distraction from Triple H and his title. It would make things interesting elsewhere on Raw and give the fans more to get excited over.
As for the ending to the Chamber Match, I pretty much guessed it after Jericho got eliminated. I knew that it would be down to Batista, Triple H and Randy Orton anyway but I had a glimmer of hope that we would see a new Champion at the end but I also knew deep down that we wouldn’t. I think that I have become programmed now to accept that Triple H will always either be the Champion or the number one contender. Its not going to change unfortunately. I am not bashing Triple H at all as I really do like him and think that he is an amazing athlete and actor who never fails to entertain. I always assumed that the World Heavyweight Title was used to put over Superstars, to promote new Champions but on Raw that doesn’t seem to be the case. Triple H has cemented his status in the WWE as one of its tops stars, the fans love him without the title but the Creative Team are not doing the Company any favours by having the same face in the Championship picture all the time. New faces need to be rotated in and out of the title picture to keep it fresh and exciting otherwise fans will lose interest. They have enough amazing athletes on Raw and fan favourites to make the division exciting and unpredictable - Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Edge, Kane, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton and Batista for a start who could all help to build up the division which could eventually include the likes of Christian and Shelton Benjamin.
Yes, it makes sense for Triple H to win on this day but why does it?, simple, because the Creative Team have built Raw and the World Heavyweight Title around him - until that changes it’s not going to make sense for anyone else to be the Champion. The fans will just have to get used to the fact that the WWE appear to feel that no one else can carry the title like Triple H and that’s who the fans want as the Champion on Raw. There is so much more to Raw though and that’s what keeps me coming back.
Take Care
