Background Story

The biggest and best Dizzy game yet! Over 100 amazing screens of cartoon fun! Go scuba diving! Take a wild ride underground! Save the yolk folk!

Troubles afoot for Dizzy in his biggest and best adventure yet! Meet Dizzy's magical chum theo, the wizard with a plethora of powerful potions! Dozy, Dylan, Dora, Daisy and Grand Dizzy - the yolk folk - are all here too and they're in hot water this time! Help Dizzy save thier shells before they end up hard boiled!

Dizzy's been visiting his local friendly Wizard Theo. Now Theo, who may be a dab hand in the waving of wands area, is not much cop at the filing-things-away-neatly department and he's left his book of Really Powerful Spells lying round in his laboratory. What's more, the book's been left open at the page headed A Really, Really Powerful Spell (That Shouldn't Be Read Out Loud). Whether Dizzy actually read the heading is not known but - yikes! - he said the spell and it's caused a catastrophe: Dizzy spirited all his Yolk Folk chums and Wizard Theo into the underworld! Cripes! There's only one course of action open to the brave little hero: read the spell again and spirit himself into the underworld to save his rotund group of pals!

The Bug

The 48k version of Spellbound Dizzy contains a nasty bug that'll stop you from completing the game; when you try to give Shamus the item he asks for, the game will crash. You can however manage to give the item to Shamus without crashing the game by dropping the item away from him and then gradually inching dizzy closer each time you drop it. Eventually, he will accept the item.

The 105th Room

Screenshot of the 105th room

Spellbound Dizzy is advertised as having 105 rooms, but if you go through the process of counting them, you only find 104. So where's the 105th? You have to use the cheat to get to it.

My Opinion

Spellbound is one of Dizzy's crowning achivements; the puzzles are intuitative and the graphics are vibrant and detailed. It might be a little too big for some players, so you'll want to play this on an emulator so that you can save your progress. The atmosphere in Spellbound is more similar to the first Dizzy game, Dizzy TUCA than Dizzys 3 & 4, which is a good thing in my book.

My Best Bits

  1. I'm about half way through the game. I'm standing on the edge of a chasm that reaches to the very center of the earth. I have 4 boulders in my inventory. There's only one thing left to do; Jump!
  2. Spellbound is big, and I mean big. The average modern player isn't likely to complete this game all in one go, and yet curiously enough, the sheer about of time that needs to be set aside to complete this game was one of the reasons I enjoyed it. Call me wierd.
