Chimpun Callao!
That's where I was born - Peru's salsa capital and the same Callao so
many salseros sing about.
Then I moved next door to Lima, where I grew up, and salsa was never far
way. My father and uncles often travelled to New York and always brought
back the latest hits from the likes of Ritchie Ray & Bobby Cruz,
Hector Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, the Lebron Brothers, etc. And that's the
kind of music I still like to play most, those classic 1970s tunes from
the Golden Years of salsa.
In my late teens, early twenties I organized a lot of salsa parties for
friends and strangers alike, really for anyone who shared my taste in
music and was willing to pay a modest entrance fee to my backyard
nightclub.
In the 90s, I moved to Brazil to Rio de Janeiro, but the salsa parties
continued. Even there in the home of samba I managed to find a salsa
hangout right in the middle of Copacabana and soon after I was throwing
my own parties for Rio's salsa aficionados.
From there the salsa trail took me to Miami. I finally got to go to the
famous salsa festival in the Calle Ocho and saw as many live salsa acts
as I could - and there are lots in Miami. And although salsa is my first
love, I really got to like the merengue they play in Miami - hard and
fast. Lots of Oro Solido, Fulanito, Banda Gorda and the likes. And best
of all, a friend gave me the opportunity to play as a guest DJ on
several occasions at a club in north Miami. The crowd there was mixed
and I was happy to see that Latinos and Americans alike enjoyed my
music.
And finally, I landed in London, in September 1999. I got lucky - on my
second day I managed to find work with Salsa Caliente in Croydon as a DJ
and teacher on several nights a week. That was my first introduction to a UK
audience and I thouroughly enjoyed it.Since then I have moved on to work
for one of the UK's main salsa promoters Salsa-UK. I now play
regularly on two nights a week at Bar Lorca in Brixton and at La Finca
in Islington. At this point I would like to thank Ara, who most of you
will know from his DJ days at Salsa Palladium, who taught me a lot about
playing salsa for a London crowd.
Catch me if you can!
Salsa has been my passion for as long as I can remember and I have
learned how to please any type of crowd, playing the latest hits and
those favorite tunes from the past.
Like my food, I like my salsa hot and spicy. QUE RICO MAMA!!!!! Pa'
