User Patterns | Using Cubase | Filters and More | I can't get Channel 4

User Patterns

The creation of User Patterns is one of the things which first attracted me to the DJXII, and also one of the things which gave me the biggest headache.

Before you can begin creating User Patterns there are a few things you must take into account.

  • Much to the disappointment of many DJXII owners, User Patterns cannot be created in Cubase. This is because Cubase doesn't support Meta Markers, so you must use a alternative package such as Cakewalk.
  • Patterns must only use MIDI channels 9 through to 16.
  • User Patterns are lost after powering down unless a set of batteries is fitted. My advice would be to have a set fitted for backup purposes, but still run the DJX off of the mains.

In basic terms, a djx pattern can be thought of as a MIDI file that it is split up into ten parts by the use of Meta Markers (See icon on the left).

Each of these parts then correspond to a button on the Pattern player of the DJXII.

Using Cakewalk as an example, the Meta Markers are dragged from the tool bar onto the sequence time-line at the point where you want the part to begin.

Notice that the first of the Meta Markers is positioned at measure 2. The reason for this is that the first measure of a sequence must be left free for patch change information.

Once your sequence has been divided up into separate parts, its simply a case of saving it as a MIDI type 0 file. This is very important otherwise the pattern launcher will reject the file.

Final Note: If you get the error Err3 in the DJXII display when loading patterns, you may need to download an alternative version of the Pattern Launcher software. Download HERE

Are you sure you can't use Cubase for User Patterns ?

Sadly, yes I'm sure. I did try to create a 'template' MIDI file in Cakewalk, complete with Meta markers, but when you load the file into Cubase it helpfully strips all the Meta Markers out.

** NEWS 4/2/2002 ** The latest version of Cubase (VST 5.1) has an flag on the Import MIDI file option to filter meta information. If you uncheck this flag, it SHOULD leave the meta markers in place ! I'm going to have a proper play with it over the next couple of days, but will let you know the results.

Filters and more

Although there are dedicated knobs on the DJX-II/B to vary the Cutoff and Resonance of the filter, they only control MIDI channels 9 to 16. Another drawback is that in user patterns they adjust all 8 channels at the same time.

As the DJXII responds to the same MIDI controllers as used in Yamaha's XG format, it's possible to use an XG mixer map in Cubase to vary the Filter Resonance, Reverb, Chorus etc. The main advantage being that you can set individual values for each of the channels.

Cakewalk users are even more fortunate as there is a dedicated studio panel available for the original DJX, which also works perfectly well with the DJXII.

I can't get Channel 4

The DJXII is actually 15 part multi-timbral as MIDI channel 4 is reserved and does not respond to MIDI note messages.
