You're always in my heart
October has come around again
with red and golden leaves
Just outside my window stir
in the warm and gentle breeze
I remember the day you planted it
we stood beneath the sky
A tear and something else
mingled in your eye
A tree which would grow old
along with me and you
The words you spoke that day
"all our dreams are coming true"

I pour myself a coffee, remember
how often you and I
shared these early mornings as
dawn would streak the sky
Out across the lake the ducks
begin to call
Wake up my sleeping angel
see the beauty of the fall
How often we would walk around
the shores of the lake
holding hands and talking of
the babies we would make

From the time you placed on my finger
this shining band of gold
I knew we'd be together and
together would grow old
The tree is tall and sturdy
reaching far into the sky
I remember how silly you felt
that it would make you cry
I wish that you could see it today
so healthy and so strong
I wish that you were here beside me
the place where you belong

Twenty six years have passed and
not a single day
Do I fail to touch its leaves
and silently to pray
Dear God in heaven care
for this man that I still love
Keep him always safe and warm
in Your kingdom up above
I remember too the day
they told me you had died
I was so sure they were wrong
so sure that they had lied

You were only twenty-four
there was no way it could be true
I waited for the door to open
waited to see you
All through that awful night
at home and all alone
I waited for your footsteps
waited by the phone
But you never called me and
you never would again

I still can feel the pain
