THE ROAD TO LOCDOM...

What every locer should know:

LOCING TIPS:

No matter how you started your locs, texture, length, or stage of your journey-  remember that these tips should apply to all loc wearers...

~Locing is about patience, so it is a long term commitment that might last 2 years or more for the locing to be complete. Be 100% sure that this is the step you want to take.

~Your hair (no matter what texture) will frizz during the process. Know that this is a normal process -all locers will have to go through this experience so relax and don't stress!

~For people with looser curl textures or naturally straight hair, accept that frizz might always be part of the locing process.

~Love those bumps! It adds character to your locs.

~It seems no 2 people with afro hair has the same texture, naturally your locs will look different.

~There might be times when you are feeling impatient, stressed, bored and negative about your choice in locing -don't worry, this is very normal -especially during the teenage phases when locs have their own mind. Take a deep breath and remember that this time will pass. Enjoy the journey, don't waste time on stressing over it!

~Be prepared to learn a few lessons on the way and throw out your old perceptions of beauty.

~Keep a loc journal to remind your Self how far you have come!

~Collect headwear and experiment.

~Your locs are unique and beautiful. No one else's locs will be the same as yours so don't compare your locs, just love and accept what you have.

~Use products that are light so there won't be any product build-up in future.

~If at any stage you are uncomfortable with what your loctician is doing to your locs, don't be afraid to be very clear and let them know or change loctician. Go with your instincts! They are your locs and you know whats best for them, so don't let others tell you otherwise. Your loctician should work with you, not against you.

~NEVER use any products that contain mineral oil and petroleum as their ingredients.

~Locing should not be an uncomfortable or unhygienic experience. Wash your locs regularly and always keep them clean.

~Water is your best friend throughout the locing stages.

~Healthy body, healthy locs.

~Use minimal of products to avoid build-up.

~If you're concerned about how the locs will look early on and/or that your loved ones will reject you if you decide to loc, then you shouldn't be considering them.

~Be willing to accept any and all stages of locdom, including the negative reactions you may receive from family, friends, and strangers.

~You are not alone - get support from good friends or other means (forums are great for this!).

~There is a wide spectrum of locing techniques and methods, from the super cultivated locs to the super organic loc methods. Each is beautiful in their own right and no method of locing should be seen as 'more acceptable' or 'more beautiful' than the other.

YOUR HAIR GROWS NATURALLY, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR STYLE! THERE ARE NO LIMITS...

FREEDOM TO BE NATURAL - FREEDOM OF CHOICE!

... I say this because many people are afraid to loc simply because they think that once they start --thats the end result.

And then you get others who feel that they have 'failed' by cutting off or undoing their locs.

Worst of all, you might get people who will put other people down for wanting to change the locs into loose napptural hair again.

Its this simple:
Your nappy hair will grow, whether you have it in locs or not.
If tomorrow, you change your mind --its up to you.

As with all internal journeys - Some will last a lifetime and some will end during the lifetime. When the heart says its time, then you should follow. It is the same with the locing process. You will just know when and how to go about your journey.

Part of the loc freedom and healthy attitude is that you are in charge of what you want to do with your hair. There are no rights and wrongs on how you have to be... No rules to how things will form. There is only trust in what comes next.

Maybe in the days when you had the relaxer, you felt you HAD to get it done or look a certain way... Maybe you have always felt that you need to appear a certain way just because you have locs...

Now is the time to free your Self from what is expected and get your thoughts to what you want to be accepted. Free up that mind.

On my quest for being loced for life, I saw that in time things might change, or might not. To be honest, I do feel that my locs will always be a part of me --but that is because it is my choice. At this moment, I do not feel fullfilled in my journey...There is more to come! But in time, this might change or never change. I will trust the process

Saying all this, the process to go through the whole journey from baby locs to mature locs is a comittment. But it doesn't mean that you don't have any other option in the future to change.

It is very possible to undo your locs even as far as a few years from the start date of locing.

An example:
password: kinky

This lovely napptural decided to undo her locs and was left with a wonderful healthy head of natural hair at year 4 of the locing journey.

This lady is one of the many locers I have come across you have seen change by choice... by heart choice.

I recently heard a lady say that after a few years of locing, she decided to take a break and cut her locs to experience loose naptural hair again.... After enjoying the loose hair stage (which lasted 2 years or so), she then went to sew her locs back in and continue her loc journey. And her locs are absolutely beautiful and long now at year 10 of the journey.

You should be locing because you are at a stage where you feel it is right for you -- For whatever reason you may have. Every locer is an individual with their own reasons. So enjoy that choice!

NAPPY FREEDOM -- FREEDOM OF CHOICE.

Your locs are beautiful.
But the freedom to have that choice to be whatever you feel without society's standards on you, is real beauty!

...Haven't we had enough of people imposing their beauty standards on us in the past?

It is our body.
Its time to heal and live in choice.
