ITS ALL ABOUT EXPERIMENTING...

LEARNING WHAT SUITS YOUR HAIR BEST,
LEARNING WHAT PRODUCTS TO USE,
UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS,
AND FINDING QUICK TRICKS TO HELP YOUR LOCS MATURE.

*

IN THE BEGINNING...

I WASH MY HAIR ONCE A WEEK.
The cleaner the scalp, the more the hair can "breathe" and the hair follicles can flourish. I wash with straight herbal shampoo,
no conditioner so the hair can lock faster. After the wassh, I let it dry naturally before twisting loose hairs at the root
around the nearest braid/lock. Then I leave it loose for the night so movement can happen to my hair. The next day I tie it
up to war my headwrap...

HEADWRAPPING...AN OPTION I CHOSE.
I love the way head wraps look, I feel as if I should carry on wearing one no matter how long into the locking process I am,
its a spiritual identity for me... something about the Erykah Badu look that I really like. Its an option. I love it.

TIME GOES ON...

When I wash my hair now, I can feel the parts that are already locked and the bits that need more time, the hair will hang
much more and the roots will lock up naturally as the hair grows.

KEEP OBSERVING YOUR HAIR GROWTH.
Its good to know how much hair grows every 3 months from the root. Keep track, so atleast you know what to expect in the 2
year mature stage and how long its going to be, its exciting. I never stop dreaming of how beautiful my locks will be... growing
in love with them now.

ALL THOSE LOOSE BITS AT THE ROOT...NO NEED TO TWIST

I get all these stray hairs at the root, especially after washing...I've learnt to deal with them. I used to let it sort itself
out and just "pop" the locks when they "hugged" but now I use another method:
I don't twist! I use my "hair wrapping technique 'n threading through". My ahir is thin as it is so I grab a section of all
the loose hairs at the root, twist them instead and wrap them around the nearest lock. Sometimes, I take these loose hairs
and thread them through a gap at the base of the lock, wrap around and thread it through again until I feel it won't unravel.
If all else fails, just remember to wrap loose hairs, never twist the lock itself. I think I'd regret it later!

Roots...keep watching each lock at the root to see if its thinning out. If so, don't panic, just use the wrapping technique
for loose hairs I described above to join the weakest root lock to the nearest neighbour lock, combining the roots. Always
think ahead 'coz these are going to be your future locks...make them strong!

THE ENDS...UNRAVELLING

My ends were really unravelling when I first started so now I've twisted the end of my locks, and wrapped it around the lock
so it has a rounded off lock appearance. I secure it with these small black rubber bands I got from an afro hair shop and
I'll leave it in...until it has locked at the bottom into this neat shape. ITS AN OPTION. I just wanted to neaten mine up
as it went.

FINALLY TOOK THOSE ELASTIC BANDS OFF THE ENDS...

after 4 months of leaving them in at the ends. The tips have shapen into this rounded tip and I'm left with my dreads looking
much neater than before. Phew! so, it did work!

HAIR DYING

I still have to try it. Want to get the colour just right but I'm thinking of leaving it 'till I am locked and mature staged.
I'll see how it goes. A dark brown...mmmm...that would look nice...

SHAMPOO
I've gone for the herbal shampoos now, after one year of experimenting. TEA TREE OIL SHAMPOOS ARE AMAZING -get a good one
that really has what it says it has! I recommend TEA TREE OIL SHAMPOO FROM BODY SHOP. It makes my scalp and hair feel great
and it doesn't leave me with any itchies...

BEFORE LOCING...

There are so many ways to lock. I found that to have my own natural hair braided into the sections of size I wanted, was the best start. It forms a lock quicker into the shape you choose. While washing, the hair is already "in place" afterwards so
the maintanance was simple. My hair texture is mild afro so with more reason for me to "conform" my hair to lock into shape,
no beeswax (I wanted it as natural as possible without clogging it). I think the more afro and tight curled your hair is,
the neater and easier the locking process is...this was just my observation from friends of all hair types who have been locking
up.

MY 'KIT'

AS THEY SLOWLY START LOCKING...
I've made up this home formula to spray on my hair... it dries my hair out just enough to make my locks thicken, stay in place and lock quicker...
* Sea Salt
* Bottled Water
* Almond Oil
ALL SHAKEN UP IN A BOTTLE TO SPRITZ MY HAIR. I couldn't give you the exact quantity...use your own decision on tha. The natural salt should be just enough to see the water frizz with bubbles when shaking up each time and the oil is added for a soft outside touch, a feww drops will do. Distilled water to keep everything natural. Thats it. Thats all I've been doing, no salons, no extra help wanted.

MY EMERGENCY KIT:
Small Black Rubber Bands and Thin Black thread.

When I look at my locks and I want to neaten them as they go (all those bumps at the "budding" stage...) I use either the bands or the thread to make my locks more even. The bands were used for rounding off the ends and the thread at the really lumpy bumpy points of my once uneven locks... always come in handy!

2003...

Trust me when I say this...hard work is rewarding. When you sit back and you know how much energy you have put into the process(in
this case -hair) without the help of no-one on hand, just your thoughts and intuition, IT FEELS GOOD! I was just rememberring
how my hair was when I strated and now... its all paying off. I'm just letting things take over. It seems the less I work
myself up, the better things turn out. Phew, it hasn't been so bad afterall!
