Paul Kamba
Paul Kamba - Grand Musicien Congolais

After independence, many African countries produced stamp designs featuring illustrations of their traditional musical instruments - a simple but effective way of reflecting their national identity and culture. Few, though, have celebrated their more contemporary music in this way. In fact, the demands of the international collector market mean that you are more likely to find Madonna or John Lennon on an African stamp than a modern African musician. One exception to this is the stamp shown below (enlarged), which commemorates the Congolese musician and recording artist Paul Kamba. There is little information available about Kamba, but he must have been an important figure to have merited this rare honour.
