Senior Conservatives have criticized William Hague
Senior Conservatives have criticized William Hague's claims that the government is setting up a European Army which risks undermining Nato. Five former ministers - including Michael Heseltine, Douglas Hurd and Geoffrey Howe - and two retired military chiefs said the proposed European Security and Defense Identity (ESDI) and Nato were "entirely complementary".
"It is not helpful to the public's understanding of this important issue to suggest otherwise," they said in a letter to the Daily Telegraph.
The letter quotes US Ambassador to the EU Richard Morningstar saying that the European defence force will help to strengthen Nato. It also quotes President Clinton saying: "In the 21st century we must deepen our transatlantic partnership...a strengthened European Security and Defense Identity is central to this vision, as is the success of Nato's initiative to enhance Europe's defense capabilities." The letter dismisses suggestions made by former Labour foreign secretary David Owen earlier this week that the ESDI will "decouple the US from European security".
"European defense co-operation is not about creating a Euro-army in competition with Nato, it is an essential underpinning of the AtlanticAlliance," it says.

Pensioners Slam Tory Pensions
Scam
William Hague's plans to give pensioners a better
deal were overwhelmingly rejected by old people in a recent survey of 5,000
pensioners by over 50's magazine Saga. A massive 72% snubbed the Tory leaders
proposals to scrap allowances such as the £150 winter fuel payment and free TV
licences, and give them just 42p extra instead
Anne Widdecombe
said today 08/10/00 it was
different for educated people to smoke pot, than the people she was mainly going
to control with £100 fines, these people lived on housing estates, these were
addicted, they steal to further the addiction. Well at least it's only the poor
she's after. The caring party strike again.
All action at the Tory conference.
