Syaoran Li is quite a unique character in CCS. 
Basically, it's like this. We first see Syaoran in Sakura's dream, but his face was pretty much hidden. Syaoran's first true appearance was in the classroom. He came as an exchange student from Hong Kong. He really had come just to take the clow cards from Sakura. 
Sakura and Syaoran had a rough start in the beginning. He appeared as very rough, mean and self-centered as he constantly told Sakura she wasn't a worthy card captor. Later on in the series, however they began to work as a team, and we get to see the other side of Syaoran. Caring, smart and brave.

Syaoran comes from a very wealthy and powerful background. He is the (I assume) direct descendant of Clow Reed. His family is rooted in Hong Kong, China. It would appear as though Syaoran's family is very strict as Syaoran was trained in the martial arts and magic from a very young age and always seems frightfully obedient. (In movie one, we see him practically freak out when his mother enters the room) We do not know much at all of Syaoran's father, but we can assume that he is passed on.
