This is the page on our Website where we put all the other bits of information about the Epworth & District Agricultural Society, as well as information about the surrounding area.
Brief History of the Show:
The event has been held in several sites around Epworth since it's birth. On Battle Green and on two other sites down West End Road. But in the 1980's we were offered our own permanent Showfield, which we purchased and this has been our home ever since. We've since purchased more land and have extended our facilities to equip ourselves better for many other types of events that we organise along with offering the same facilties to anyone else wishing to rent the Field. This year has seen us build a permanent toilet block which were in use for our 2006 August Bank Holiday events. 2006 also marked the Diamond celebration of the show.
Epworth (the Town):
Made famous by John Wesley who founded the Methodist movement, Epworth has become an integral part to anyone who is a Methodist and the village is always welcoming tourists far and wide on the trail of John Wesley and his family. His family home is preserved as a Museum to the family which centres mainly around his mother.
There are two lovely historic churches here, but the Village is home to three places of Worship. St. Andrew's (C of E), The Methodist Church and the Baptist Chapel. The three religions come together under the banner of Show Praise and the Epworth Show is very fortunate to be part of that by their presence in the 'Show Praise' Tent on show day. A Sunday evening service is also held the evening before the show.
The centre of the village is home to many old buildings and the monument where John Wesley used to preach. There is also Manor Court House, the Post Office, The Temperance Hall and some pubs: The Red Lion, The Mowbray, The Queens Head, The Tap, The White Bear and The Old School Inn.
There is also some good shopping available, Clothes, Antiques, Home-wares, etc.
The Isle of Axholme:
Epworth is seen as the 'Capital' of the Isle, though this could be disputed by other villages. The Isle of Axholme was once an Island, surrounding (surprisingly) by water, but Vermuyden visited the area centuries ago and turned the damp water-logged areas, channeling the water into the Trent and other rivers to make a very fertile area, great for farming.
Other local events in the area include:
The Festival of the Plough - held in September in Low Burnham. This event is about old style farming, steam and vintage vehicles.
The Haxey Hood - held on 6th January in the village of Haxey. This is an interesting tradition that dates back more than 700 years.
Wesley Day - Biannual event held in May to Celebrate John Wesley being an Epworth resident, stalls, floats and entertainment through the day.
