The Restoration 2

May 2004 - Well almost 6 months after last working on the Barndoor, I finally get round to working on him.. Becky and I are taking welding lessons so the welding and fabrication work is on hold.... so I thought I may aswell start stripping the engine of its tinware and cleaning that up... make way for that lovely Judson Supercharger i'm looking for. ;)

So I stripped the tinware off the ORIGINAL engine... check the number same as whats on the Wolfsburg Birth Certificate!!!, most of the tinware screws needed to be cut off unfortunately, and I need to source some tinware :(..

I thought i'd have a look inside the rocker cover just to see what its like (and how different from TP stock 1600 heads).. Can you see how clean they are, I dont think this engine has been run since being rebuilt!!!.. (How wrong was I then... :( )

More work soon hopefully, get the tinware powder coated soon

21st May 2004 - Worked on the engine for another couple of hours in the evening, I thought i'l pull the heads off to see how the combustion chambers were.. Unfortunately, it was sad to see that the pistons and barrells were it not fit state to leave on the engine and to see that the conrods and parts of the crank were actually rusty... As you can see from the photo below the rings on the piston had melted into the piston.

I never new that a 30hp engine had no cam followers, the push rods (pictured right) have the cam follower moulded and forged/formed into the end of the push rod... much better idea I think.

As you can also see the combustion chambers were filled with all sorts of crap.. get the pistons off and have a good look inside the engine next.

This engine is gonna need a complete strip down and rebuild :(

March-May 2005 - We decided to bite the bullet and have the welding done professionally, so the van was packed off to Andover to visit Paul Wisk (schwimmerwagen), so heres a couple of pics of the progress

May 19th 2005 - Managed to get out in the garage last night and finally split the case on the 30hp engine, all looks fine, apart from some surface rust on the journals and conrods.. nothing major... bolt it back up and throw on the new pistons and barrels next.
