The City's Archaeology collections include spectacular Saxon and medieval collections, and are designated as being of outstanding importance to the nation. The size and range of the collections reflect the importance of Southampton in the past and in the present, and 50 years of systematic archaeological investigations in the City. This means that the collections are amongst the top 62 museum collections in the country (outside national museums), and in the top ten most significant archaeology collections.   A FOSMAG Beneficiary. Southampton Art Gallery, Civic Centre and Library - Internationally recognised as having one of the finest collections of 20th century British art outside London. Follow the 'Walk the Walls' signposts and panels, or buy a guide (the award winning 'Walk the Southampton Walls') from the City Museums or from the Leisure and Visitor Centre, and give yourself a guided tour of medieval Southampton (the ‘Old Town’).  Town Tours - free walks of the Old Town medieval walls, are also available to individuals and groups.
The Millais Gallery is located in the Sir John Everett Millais building of Southampton Institute, together with the academic faculties of Media Arts and Design. The Millais Gallery was opened in June 1996 to coincide with the opening of an exhibition organised in association with Southampton City Art Gallery to mark the centenary of Millais's death in August 1896. Southampton City Archives collects, catalogues and conserves archival material for the City of Southampton...... Members of the public are welcome to visit the Archives search room, where items in the collection can be consulted.  A FOSMAG Beneficiary. Oral History Unit - "We need projects that will involve people in exploring what it means to remember, and what to do with memories to make them active and alive, as opposed to mere objects of collection…"
The First Gallery is also a private house in Bitterne, where the Clarke family have for many years provided a venue for good but often little-known artists and craftspeople to show and sell their wares.   Leo Stable, the founder of the John Hansard Gallery on Southampton University Campus was an associate, and the City Art Gallery maintains close links. The John Hansard Gallery, based at the University of Southampton’s Highfield campus, is one of Britain’s leading public galleries of contemporary visual art.  A FOSMAG Beneficiary. Southampton Hall Of Aviation - The Hall of Aviation depicts the history of aviation in the Solent area and Hampshire. The Museum tells the story of 26 aircraft companies including the Supermarine Aircraft works where RJ Mitchell's famous aircraft, the Spitfire, was designed and built.....Visitors may also board the 4 engine Sandringham Flying Boat. There are many other exhibits in the form of graphics boards models and aircraft.  A FOSMAG Beneficiary.

 

 

 

Some views of Southampton's Heritage

Tudor House - 15th century House (Currently Closed).  The Museum exhibition charts a social history of Southampton, Tudor Knot Garden is a particularly fine feature.  A FOSMAG Beneficiary. The Bargate Discover the history of Roman, Saxon and Medieval Southampton.  The Museum of Archaeology is in God's House Tower a massive stone building where the town gunner mixed his gun powder for the canon which defended the town during the 15th century.  A FOSMAG Beneficiary.
The Red Lion Pub - Scene of the trial of those who conspired against the life of and crown of Henry V in 1415. Prior to Henry's departure to Agincourt. The conspirators where found guilty and executed outside the nearby Bargate. Model of Medieval Southampton on show in the Bargate. Tudor Merchant's Hall - 15th century timber framed building stood originally in St Michael's Square...The Hall was used for the storage and sale of woollen cloth brought into the town by the merchants who were not burgesses and freemen of Southampton.  The ground floor was used as a fish market.
Insiders Guide To Southampton Southampton - Attractions and Places to Visit Southampton Maritime Museum is housed in the Wool House, an ancient building built in the early 1400's as a warehouse for wool bales; it has also seen service as home to prisoners of war and as an aircraft factory. Holy Rood Church - The ruins of this church stand as a memoriam to the merchant navy men who lost their lives in World War II. Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre - Learn about all of Southampton's open space, its abundant wildlife and its ecology - A FOSMAG Beneficiary CHURCH OF ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL  - St Michael’s Church, the oldest building and place of worship in the City of Southampton.
