Director:
Micheal Reeves In the year 1645 during the cival war in England, law and order had broken down, so Matthew Hopkins on appointment by Oliver Cronwell takes it upon himself to tour England and search out and kill witches. Just the name of Matthew Hopkins strikes fear in the hearts of superstitious people, who's lives are already torn apart by the cival war. Unfortunately for Hopkins he messes with the wrong girl, who he bribes into having sex with him or he will kill her father, who he accuses as being in league with the devil. The girls fiance is one of Cronwells top soldiers, and when he finds out what as been going on, he goes in pursuit of Hopkins. What follows is a chase across England until he catches up with Hopkins, then everything finishes up with a violent ending. Witch Finder General is a great film, with great settings and a good atmosphere that suits the time it was set. The film is fast paced too and seems to be over all too quickly. Overal a great British Horror film that works brilliantly. The disk itself is loaded with extras, and you get the choice to either watch the UK cinematic version, which was cut by the censors, or you can watch the European cut which was fully uncut. The only downside is the extra scenes from the european cut have not been digitally remastered, so they seem to not flow in with the film as I would've liked. Film Score |
