I have been flying for 5 years and I started of building my own free flight and R/C Gliders, then I got a Piper Cub which I learnt to fly with. I have been introduced to aerobatics by Steve Burgess. I live in Dalton Neer Lockerbie I fly at Dumfries Flying Club
I am 17 years old and the only one in my family who knows what F3A Means and some times trying to explain things about planes to my family is a pain in the back side especially when it comes to starting my plane or calling out the manoeuvres
I am going to Colladge part time To do Engineering and I am at the moment trying to pass my test so I can drive to the flying club without having to wait all day for some one to take me .
I started flying at the age of seven with a control line model called "Tuffy". After a few months on that I then went onto a two channel trainer called "Trotter". It was on this aircraft that I learned most of my early skills.
After this came various advanced trainers and aerobatic trainers such as "Skyrider" (Davis Boddington) before progressing onto my first proper aerobatic aeroplane which was a "Mini Atlas" at about age 13.
I then built myself a "Chill Wind 40" and entered my first Scottish aerobatic event in October 1993. 6 months later in March I flew my first FAI comp and made it into the International team that June.
I have been in the Scottish team since then and won the individual event in 2000 with my "Typhoon 2+2" YS140 FZ
This year I am flying a modified "Alliance" with a YS140DZ
Malcolm Harris has been in R/C for over 35 years. His first radio had two valves in the receiver and was powered by two 22.5 volt hearing aid batteries, a 1.5 volt valve heater battery and a 4.5 volt cycle battery for the wind up rubber escapement! Needless to say he thinks his JR PCM10X is an improvement!
He has been into serious aerobatics for the last 17 years and has represented Scotland 12 times in the Triple Crown and 4 times in the Lowland Cup. He has also been Scottish Aerobatic Champion although he concedes that Steve Burgess didn't fly that year! His wife Janice has asked him not to win it again as she hates cleaning silver and so far he has acquiesced to her wishes!
Malcolm is 51, married with two children and is the technical director of a small hydraulic engineering company and says that he doesn't know what he wants to do when he grows up but that hopefully it will make him rich and famous.
Malcolm has been flying since the age of 6 and is now getting a bit long in the tooth at the age of 16! He has been in the Scottish F3A team for four years now and has enjoyed three team wins in the Triple Crown and third being best individual placing in this competition to date. Malcolm has competed in the Tournoi De Champagne for four years now and has steadily improved his placing best being 20th out of 60. Malcolms recent claim to fame is being selected for the UK F3A team for the2003 Worlds Championships in Poland in which he looks forward to giving his elder brother, Angus, a run for his money. Apart from model flying Malcolm also enjoys playing golf and tennis. He has recently finished his Highers and is hoping they will set him on his way to a career in Dentistry.
