Music Machine.Camden Town London.
One night some record company type must have sat down and thought what he needed was a showcase gig so that in one hit he could expose an audience to all his bands
Thus we had Saxon headlining with Preying Mantis secound support and Angel Wytch opening.
Sadly London Underground conspired to allow me and many others to spend an inordinate amount of time admiring the brickwork of some of their tunnels by the light of a 10watt lightbulb instead of witnessing Angel Wytchs' set. Which we caught the last ten secounds of. Which was a shame as judging by the audiences reaction was an absolute blinder.
Preying Mantis look bored....Still the bar was open, there were girls to meet and joints to be smoked in the stairwells.
Now Saxon on the other hand rocked, they looked like they were enjoying themselves, they had just recorded "Saxon" and were doing their damnest to make us buy it.
And buy it we did coz it kicked arse. If you never heard their stuff but like Def Lepperd give it go
One of the guitarist had a nut in the middle of the back of his Gibson Firebird that he attached both ends of the strap to that allowed him to "propeller" the guitar. This looked really cool.
Some years later I saw them in Bristol and hung round the stage door to get albums autographed and showed them these pix. He told me that during another show he did the "propeller" bit and caught the strings by the machine heads on something that ripped the bridge out of the body mid solo. Some kindly soul in the support act lent him his axe to finish the gig with!
