Reading Rock Festival 1979.

What a line up.

  • Whitesnake, Molly Hatchet
  • Steve Hackett, Motorhead
  • Gillan, and many others

I got so wasted at Reading.Incredibly the very first people my mate and I ran into on hiking down there were a bunch of mates also from Milton Keynes who were on their way to the tents after seeing Motorhead. We were SO lucky with that otherwise we would never have found them.

The festival was great, the bands were great, the drugs were great, the food was complete shit, the toilets were an adventure. Fortunately my sphicter closed itself on Friday night and reopened for business at 2pm Monday afternoon. Many thanx to the people who allowed me to use their lavatory, blocking it completely i'm afraid. They lived in a house opposite a layby on the main drag out of Reading from which we were trying to hitch.

Six hours it took to get a lift out of Reading to London. When we got there me and my mate Chris and some other hippy from Norwich (Who still owes me a fiver!) got stuck there and spent the night in St James Park. In the morning I was having a piss against a tree when in drove the park police. "Have you been here all night?" they asked. "Yes, We climbed in over those railings"the hippy replied.

Ten minutes and a thorugh search through our possessions and pockets later, that revealed my skins, and the hippys court summons for being busted on the Friday night in Reading for possession of LSD (Oh joy). The Police imparted two pertainent pieces of information to us. One: St James is a Royal Park. Two Climbing over the railings when the park is closed, sleeping there and urinating against one of Her Majesty's trees was a Treasonable offence.(Oh shit!)

However as we didn't have any gear on us they told us to and I quote "FUCK OFF."

Hey ho we went to rock festival and ended up commiting treason isn't life a blast?!

If you own a cd called "The best of Gillan" it features a live rendition of "Smoke on the Water".This Picture was shot during it. The god awful noise at the beginning of the track is the guitar being teethed and dragged across the backline. Sounds shite, looked good. You had to be there man.
