The tracing of Charles Warrender has not been easy. A number of assumptions have been made below and are highlighted where made. The main problem is based around the fact that Charles' given age at death does not correspond with the birth dates given and are out by two years. Any help in this direction would be most readily accepted.
1852 Birth calculated from age at death is between 8th May 1851 and 8th May 1853. From the 1881 Census there is a Charles Warrender (see 1881) whose given age at that time would make him minus two in 1852. This Charles Warrender was born at Cannock, Staffordshire.
1852 The Charles Warrender above was baptised at St. Mary, Brewood, Staffordshire, England which is quite close to Cannock, the assumed birth place given above. The baptism was on 2nd May 1852 to the parents Joseph Warrender and Ann.
1881 Census for 304 Parr Fold, Worsley, Lancashire , Englandgives Charles Warrender as a farm labourer. There is a possibility that a farm labourer in Staffordshire would migrate to Lancashire in the hope of becoming an industrial worker at around this time.
1882-88 Probably married between these dates to Jane Ellen Bradburn 10 years his junior. Possibly at Altrincham, Lancashire, England, possibly with a connection to the Unicorn Inn.
1888 Birth of his daughter Jessie Madeleine Warrender who later married an Ernest Alfred Hayball.
1889 Birth of his daughter Alice Eveline Warrender who later married a Mr. Pritchard.
1890 Birth of his son Charles Edwin Warrender while living at 93 Bridson Street, Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire, England on 21st April 1890. Charles is described as a Stoker in a Gas Works. Jane Ellen registered the birth on 2nd June 1890. A Stoker in a gas works was;- "A Workman employed to charge the retorts with coal and, after carbonising, to draw off the hot coke. Men employed to fuel and attend boilers or furnaces, usually known elsewhere as stokers, in the gas industry were called firemen."
1895 Birth of their daughter May Stephenson Warrender to Charles Warrender and Jane Ellen Warrender nee Bradburn while living at 38 Bute Street, Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire, England.on 30th May 1895. Charles was described as a Gas Stoker (see 1890 above) and Jane Ellen registered the birth on 11th July 1895.
1896 Birth of his son Henry Stephenson Warrender
1898 Birth of his son William James Warrender
1899 Birth of his daughter Helen Warrender who later married John Frost.
1900 In the years before his death Charles Warrender was a coal trimmer in Cardiff Docks. This involved being in the hull of a ship collecting coal mined from the South Wales Valleys, when the coal was dropped from the crane into the hull, the coal trimmers pushed it into the corners to increase the capacity of the ship. It was deemed a dustier environment than coal mining.
1904 Death of Charles Warrender while living at 55 Dorset Street, Grangetown, Cardiff, Wales on 10th April 1904 from Pneumonia Cardiac Syncope. Charles is described as a labourer at a gas works. His wife Jane Ellen Warrender nee Bradburn was present when he died.
