"Needed is a program that can alter the terms of existing public debate on housing, that challenges the commodity nature of housing and its role in our economic and social system, and demonstrates how people's legitimate housing needs can be met through an alternative approach."
Emily Achtenberg and Peter Marcuse (1986) "Towards the decommodification of housing", in R. Bratt et al (eds) Critical Perspectives on Housing (Temple University Press) p.405

Gentrification in Bristol, England
Welcome to Gentrification Web, which turned 6 years old in April 2006. This website was the first (and remains the only) comprehensive on-line resource for anyone interested in learning more about gentrification.
The web is a great vehicle for raising public awareness of gentrification, and I hope that this website will be informative to those who spend some time checking it out. Sorry about all these hideous pop-up ads, many of which (to my horror) advertise real estate, giving the exact opposite message of the rest of this website. One of the drawbacks of free webspace, I suppose!
