This case study looks at the distribution of housing areas in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. From the affluent central apartments of the Centro and beach areas like Copacabana and Ipanema to the favelas of Rocinha on the hillslopes of the Corcovado (with the statue of Christ on the top) and along the roads out of town to the rich coastal suburb of Barra de Tijuca. We will try to explain why different groups of people live in these housing areas.
