GORLESTON v GODMANCHESTER ROVERS
RIDGEONS LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION
SATURDAY 29TH MARCH, 2008

KO 3

EMERALD PARK

A strong wind blowing around Emerald Park must have affected the Gorleston performance as the first half was possibly the worst they'd played this season.

Godmanchester were on top for most of it with most of Gorleston's problems coming from their own mistakes and misplaced passes.

The first shot at goal came from Stephen D Hurst after Goddys keeper Gavin Armitage had caught a Gorleston corner and punted the ball forward. Godmanchester continued to have the best of the chances, all from long range, and luckily their accuracy was off.

It was half an hour before Gorleston's first chance when Ricci Butler's effort from five yards out was deflected wide. Eddie Thompson then had to be on his guard to clear off the line after Simon Osborne broke through to beat Tom Marsden.

Nathan Thompson did have the ball in the net on the stroke of half time, sliding in at the far post following a corner, but celebrations were cut short by the linesmans flag who had spotted a handball.

Gorleston started the second half better. In the first five minutes Gary Ingram dragged a shot wide from a narrow angle, Armitage got down well to tip a long range Ricci Butler effort round the post and Gorleston forced a series of corners.

Godmanchester's best effort came after 58 minutes when Chris Hyem shot from the edge of the box but Marsden tipped the ball over the bar.

On 64 minutes Gary Todd came on for Richie Fruin and the Greens went to a 3-4-3 formation. It almost worked as Ingram blasted over from 3 yards out then Butler played a one-two with Todd but again the shot was high and wide. Keeper Armitage then fumbled another effort and Ingram, following up, backheeled the ball into the side netting.

With time runing out and the game looking to be heading to a goalless draw Gorleston were awarded a free kick for a push on Todd. The free kick was curled in superbly to the far post where Peter Lambert stole in to nod the ball home, perhaps for a result Godmanchester didn't deserve.
