GRIEF BIOGRAPHY

GRIEF SOCIETY sprang into life several years ago carving out a unique identity as one of the finest independent bands working in the UK. The band has been together since 1995/1996 but it was with the release of their debut album and the 1997 addition of ex-LITTLE BIG HORN guitarist NICK SLATER that things really began to take off.

The band's original line-up featured Angus Nurse (Bass/Vocals), Julian Doyle (Drums) and James Williams (Guitar/Vocals) the band's early gigs achieved good reviews and some favourable comparisons with Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, but made little headway and split after about a year.

Replacing Williams and Doyle were drummer Floyd McCrory (who had played with Nurse in a semi-punk band called The Adventure Game) and guitarist Stefan Prydderch. The band played a number of gigs and recorded the majority of the band's first album.

'GRIEF's' debut album "How We Used To Live" was released in January 1997 gaining excellent reviews in Kerrang! Rock'n' Reel and FRONTIERS magazine (who put a GRIEF SOCIETY track on the cover CD of one issue.) By the time the album was released, drummer Steve Rix had joined to replace McCrory who had left to play guitar and drums ('though not at the same time) with his own punk band. Rix had played on one track of "How We Used To Live" and he and Nurse agreed to change and expand the Grief Society sound for the tour that followed the release of the album. Guitarist Nick Slater was brought in to enhance the band's sound and the new line-up quickly established itself as a successful live band. They also began work on a series of new recordings with Slater establishing himself as a solid contributor to the band's songbook.

Although sales of "How We Used To Live" were modest, the album gained considerable radio airplay and many favourable reviews. The follow up "Waterfall" EP was released in September 1997 and was more successful, selling in large numbers (now in it's third pressing) and generating extensive radio airplay around the world. The band's records have been played on radio stations in Germany, The USA, the Netherlands and the UK.

NICK SLATER went walkabout early in 1999 and was replaced sometime in June 1999 by the elfin chirpy, yet confused, optimist that is guitarist DON STICK. The band played a handful of shows during 1999 and 2000, but spent much of the Milennium Year concentrating on the completion of their second album.

In October 2000, the band embarked upon a mini-tour of the UK playing shows in Cambridge, Luton, Northampton and Twyford and spent the rest of the year preparing for the release and promotion of their second album. The band signed to the independent Mangoneworld Record label, run by the band's booking agent for the album's release.

UNIVERSAL MISUNDERSTANDING was released in the UK on 31 March 2001 and favourable reviews of the album appeared almost everywhere. The band played a show in London at the end of April and celebrated 1st May 2001 with a show at The Edge in Luton, Bedfordshire. A mini UK tour followed in October 2001.

UNIVERSAL MISUNDERSTANDING was released in the US in August 2002 by Orchard Distribution. Tracks from the album continue to gain radio airplay in germany, France and the USA. During 2002 the band also completed a new promo EP and contributed music to two short films.

With five successful tours behind them and an ever growing fanbase the future's looking bright for the GRIEF boys....
