Think of this as a spare section for collecting together things I've written here and there. Some of these might be newsgroup posts, but what the hell, everyone else has completely self-absorbed sections of their websites, so why shouldn't I? Take, for example, the idea of style and design. I guess it's down to my upbringing, but I've got a love affair with spacious old English houses - and decidedly minimalist furniture. Space, light, wood, metal, glass. That kind of thing. I don't actually do ornaments or similar fuss, and so my spaces tend to be functional. Simple and functional. Particularly if I get plenty of storage places to put the endless paperwork of life out of sight and out of mind! But this is why my amplifier designs tend to be in this same vein, and are things which I'd very much like in my own living room. I'll have to add a photo or two of my 'portable installation' from Heidelberg. Plus, I guess, I'm starting to appreciate good engineering - something which isn't the same as the latest gadget, but is simply something that's been done really well. Jags, for example, are wonderful examples of a car designed the right way (even if ones from the early 1980s were assembled badly, the underlying design was wonderful). The same definitely goes for valve amplifiers - which is one of the reasons they tend to not only sound so good, but you can fire up an original one from the 1940s and expect it to work. Quite frankly, let's see how the current solid-state stuff fares in 50 years time! |
