BACK TO THE MILLENNIUM

By Mike Mahoney

This was the first ever BTTF fan fiction I ever wrote, and I wrote it just for fun. It wasn't until later that I decided to create a website for it, and wrote the others. I'd wondered how you would celebrate the millennium if you had a time machine. Would you wait through the natural course of time? Would you use the time machine?

A few notes. I always saw Marlene as being slightly older than Marty Junior (don't know why though! :-)), so in this story she is. And check out the initials and surname of Jules' girlfriend... :-)

Note, May 2003: This story is no longer part of my "universe" since it is so different to the one I've developed. For instance, where is Ritchie during this story? Why wouldn't the time travellers just use the time train? Therefore it's been "axed" so to speak, although I've kept it on here for entertainment. Plus it is my first story, so it's kind of special. :-)

"Marty, Jennifer, good to see you. How are the kids?"

"They're fine Clara, is there somewhere we can put them whilst they sleep?"

"Sure, you can put them in Jules' old room." Clara took 3 year old Marlene McFly and 2 year old Marty Junior and put them in the room. Marty and Jennifer, now both 31, had decided to name their kids these names because they had heard them in 2015 and liked them.

Doc came up from his lab. "Marty, Jennifer, you're here!"

"Yeah Doc, here to see in the 21st Century."

In 1 hour time it would be 2000. The McFlys and Browns had planned to see in the millennium together and everyone was getting together for this special night. Jules, now 25, had bought his new girlfriend Harriet Georgina Wells. Verne, now 23, was still single.

"It's so nice to see everybody together again," said Clara.

"Hey Doc," asked Marty, "Have you already seen this night in the time machine?"

"No," replied Doc. "I thought I'd wait for the night itself like everyone else."

"So this is your first millennium?"

"Yes."

Jennifer came up.

"Oh, Doc, isn't this exciting? Although I wish my parents could be here, but they're in New Zealand and I don't think it's safe enough for the kids to fly," she said.

"Probably not," said Doc, "That's why Clara and I waited until 1896, when the kids were 10 and 8 before returning to the future. That, and it took me 10 years to build a new time machine."

"You know," said Jennifer, "I wonder what it was like 1000 years ago when 999 became 1000."

"Most people didn't even know," said Doc. "Especially not in America. But some people did."

"Hey Doc," asked Marty.

"I think I know what you're going to ask," said Doc "and the answer's no. No time travelling tonight. I'm too tired to go back to the year 999."

"Emmett, that's a great idea!" said Clara. "What better way to celebrate the millennium than seeing the previous one in?"

"Actually....." began Doc, but Marty interrupted. "I'm with Clara. It sounds great."

Jennifer, Jules, Harriet and Verne nodded their heads in agreement.

"Oh, OK," said Doc. "I suppose it wouldn't hurt."

Jennifer went to get her kids and everyone got in the DeLorean. Then they realised they didn't all fit in the DeLorean so the Brown family took the DeLorean and the McFlys and Harriet got into the special trailer that Doc had made. Everybody was set.

Doc typed in the date, "December 31st 999, London, 11.40pm." He decided to go to London because some people there knew the date and would probably be celebrating.

The car hit 88 and disappeared.

Lord Tanson and his servants were in their manor castle just outside London. In 1000 years time this area would be known as Greenwich and there would be a big Dome there, but for know Tanson ruled it.

It was December 31st 999. It was said that as the year became 1000 the world would end, and the residents were very fearful about this.

It was 20 minutes to 12. Nothing had gone wrong yet. Tanson was a bit relieved.

Suddenly he heard 3 sonic booms out from nowhere, and then saw a dragon fly across the sky.

"The end of the world!" he shrieked.

The "dragon" was in fact the DeLorean. They'd reached 999. Everything looked so primitive.

"There's the Lord of the Manor's place," said Doc to everyone.

"Dad," asked Verne, "he won't see us, will he?"

"I don't think so," said Doc. "We're well hidden by the clouds."

Doc was wrong though. Tanson had called together everyone in the area about the dragon.

"We must kill it," he was saying.

"Excuse me sire," said the priest, "but what if this angers the Lord?"

"The Lord would want us to live, He wouldn't send a dragon. It's the work of Satan," Tanson replied. "We must kill it to make the Lord happy and forgive us."

The villagers cheered.

"After the dragon! Get every weapon you can!"

"Oh no, the DeLorean needs altering," said Doc. "It won't take long, but we need to land so I can sort out that headlamp."

"OK Doc," said Marty from the trailer (Doc had installed communication between the two.)

The DeLorean landed gracefully. Everybody got out to stretch their legs, whilst Marty helped Doc to repair the lamp. Verne helped Jennifer to feed Marlene and Marty Jr.

"Mommy, where are we?" asked Marlene.

"Asleep dear," said Jennifer. "You're having a nice dream." She hadn't told her kids about time travel yet, waiting until they were older, but didn't want to leave them in 1999, even if only for a second.

"OK," said Marlene. "Look, there's the castle I dream about when I'm a princess!"

In the distance was a crowd.

"Sounds like they're celebrating something," said Marty.

Then.....

"Leave us, dragon of Satan!" It was Lord Tanson and his mob. They'd found the DeLorean and its crew.

The 1999 folks put their hands up. Doc walked forward.

"Satan?"

"Yes, the dragon from Satan! No, he must have got you!"

"Kill it, kill it," chanted the mob.

I think we're in trouble here, thought Doc to himself. Big trouble.

The mob advanced.

"Quick everyone, back to the time machine!" yelled Doc. Marty and Jennifer each picked up a kid and ran to the trailer. Jules and Harriet did so too, but Harriet tripped.

"Jules!"

Jules went back to get her, but Doc didn't realise and set the time circuits for December 31st 1999.

Jules and Harriet watched helplessly as the DeLorean went back to 1999 without them.

"We're safe," said Clara to Doc as they re-entered 1999. "Just in time."

"Yep," said Doc and kissed her. "Now let's celebrate our millennium."

Marty and Jennifer put their kids down. Marty went to Doc's drawer and pulled out the sleeping ray. He put it on his kids so they would both think it was a dream. "Wouldn't want them to remember something like that," said Marty.

"Mom," asked Verne, "Where's Jules?"

"He was in the trailer," said Clara.

"No, he wasn't, we thought he and Harriet were with you in the car like on the way to 999," said Jennifer.

Everyone was puzzled.

"Maybe he's in the bathroom having some fun," said Marty, trying hard not to snigger.

"JULES!" everyone called, "HARRIET!" No-one answered.

"Oh my God, you don't think....." Clara began.

"We've left them behind!" finished Doc.

Jules and Harriet watched the DeLorean disappear. So did Lord Tanson.

"The dragon's.....gone! How did you do that?"

"He thinks we made the time machine go!" whispered Jules to Harriet. Then to Tanson, "Uh, we.....ate a magical berry!"

"What are you saying?" hissed Harriet.

"Just play along," said Jules. Then to Tanson, he continued with, "They can be found in the forest near the river."

"Show us," said Tanson.

"Uh, we can't. Once you've been there, you can't go back. But I can give you directions," said Jules helpfully.

"Satan!" chanted the mob.

"OK, that didn't work," said Harriet. "Now what?"

"Uh..." mumbled Jules.

Then they heard 3 sonic booms. The DeLorean was back!

"They came back for us!" said Harriet.

Doc dropped a rope down.

"Quick, grab this!" he yelled. They did so, and Doc gave Jules the sleep ray.

"Use this on everyone, they must have no memory of this incident in case it affects the timeline."

Jules did so, and Tanson and his mob fell asleep. Doc landed the DeLorean and everyone except Clara got out (she was looking after Marlene and Marty Jr, both still asleep.). Doc, Marty, Jennifer, Jules, Harriet and Verne carried everyone back to their homes. Doc had visited them 20 minutes earlier first to find out where they all lived.

"There, now it'll all be a dream."

Once this was done, everybody got into the time machine. Doc checked everyone was there and set the time circuits.

"It's 15 minutes to 12, let's go 14 minutes into the future!"

Three sonic booms, and the DeLorean arrived over London. This time, they made sure no-one saw them.

"One minute to go Jen," said Marty to his wife. He looked at his watch and saw the second hand advance towards 11.12PM (the watch was still on Hill Valley time). 50 seconds.....

Doc landed the DeLorean in a copse. No-one was around. Everybody got out, and Clara went to get the champagne she'd bought with her from 1999.

"5 seconds....." said Marty. "4, 3, 2, 1, happy new millennium!"

Everyone cheered as 999 became 1000.

"Hey Doc," said Marty, "look at that guy over there."

Doc did so. The guy, who hadn't seen the time travellers, looked very much like Marty's dad George.

"That must be your distant ancestor," said Doc. "Shh, somebody's coming!"

It was Lord Tanson. He'd woken up from his "dream".

"Sire, it's 1000 AD," said Marty's ancestor. "The world is safe."

"We're spared," said Tanson. "The Lord has spared us. Satan has fallen. Actually, I had a strange dream....." Tanson and Marty's ancestor walked off.

"Well, let's get back to 1999," said Doc. "We've got our own millennium to welcome."

Everybody got into the DeLorean. Doc typed in the relevant date and place. He decided to go to 11.59PM because no-one wanted to wait the full 40 minutes until that time.

"Prepare for temporal displacement!" The DeLorean hit 88 and left 999.

"Uh, Doc, I think this is the wrong year." Marty said.

"I don't remember 1999 being this advanced," said Jules. He looked at the time display. "Dad, you've typed in a 2 instead of a 1."

"Wow," said Jennifer, "2999!"

New New New Hill Valley, as the place was now called, was big. Buildings were everywhere, and all were at least 50 stories high. Hovercars flew all around the DeLorean, in all directions. Then suddenly, they all landed on a holo-bridge. Banners popped out of the sides of the bridge, all saying 2999. The beings inside the cars - humans, aliens, robots - got out to welcome in the New Year. The Mayor, who was a robot, made a speech.

"The technology here is amazing!" said Doc. A space-bus flew past, "Next service to Alpha Centauri leaves at 3am Earth time, journey time 1 hour," everyone read the advert on the side. Then Harriet looked at the sky.

"Look!" she exclaimed. Everyone looked at the Moon. There were lights all over it, saying 2999.

"5 seconds to go....." said Marty once again, "4, 3, 2, 1...."

There was a loud cheer as NNNHV welcomed in 3000. The 2999 on the Moon turned to 3000. It would turn back to 2999 soon so that the next time zone could welcome in 3000, but that didn't matter.

Flying past a tall building, Marty noticed something.

"Pull in closer Doc," he said. Doc did so, and Marty noticed his distant descendants welcoming in the New Year.

"Well, that's two millenniums we've seen," said Doc. "Let's go see ours!" He set the time circuits and the DeLorean disappeared.

Everyone was ready. Clara had got more champagne, and they were sitting around the TV. The Mayor of Hill Valley was at Courthouse Square, and the residents were counting down.

"10, 9, 8, 7....."

"Jen, I love you," whispered Marty to his wife.

"I love you too," she answered and they kissed.

"3, 2, 1, Happy New Year!" The Browns and McFlys made a toast.

"What a night to remember!" said Marty.

"What a magical way to celebrate," said Clara to Doc. "Welcoming in 1000, 2000 and 3000, all within minutes of each other. A night I'll never forget."

"Here, here," said everyone else. "Here's to the future!"

The End
