Wall Street Journal examines concerns over limits of HIPAA Medical Privacy Rule
HIPAA The Wall Street Journal on Saturday examined how forms that outline the medical privacy rule under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act "essentially detai[l] the many ways a doctor can use and disclose medical information -- often without a patient's consent or knowledge" -- and how patients who visit physician offices, hospitals and pharmacies mistakenly "assume signing somehow protects their privacy" (Francis, Wall Street Journal, 10/21).

EDITORIAL COMMENT
HIPAA The last two stories, one on identity theft resulting from information stolen often by inside workers in hospital settings, and the one about the woman decrying that she had problems accessing vital medical information on her husband, point out the two big problems that HIPAA has caused.

A real steal
HIPAA From http://www.modernhealthcare.com/article.cms?articleId=41856 "In 2001, William Winkenwerder, who was about to take over as assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, told attendees at a Boston healthcare information technology convention that "privacy and security are the Chernobyl that is waiting to happen for the healthcare industry." HIPAA law in need of some fine-tuning
HIPAA Penny Arsenault, Milford Published: Thursday, Sep. 28, 2006 Once again I’m writing to sound off about the “inefficiencies” within our governmental system. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 was designed to protect the privacy of our personal medical information. I have two distinct problems with the act. First, my husband had a “routine” medical appointment, and I had tried calling him at home later to ask how things went. When I didn’t get an answer I became alarmed. I called the medical center and asked if he had been there. Due to HIPAA, they couldn’t tell me.
