Philip Handy, a former singer with the choir, trains and conducts the Highcliffe Junior Choir.
 
 

Philip was appointed Musical Director and Conductor of Highcliffe Junior Choir in April 2008, having begun singing in the Mixed Voice Section of the Choir in his late teens. Philip undertook cello and conducting studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2002. After graduating from the RNCM in 2006 he started conducting the Mixed Voice Choir under the kind tutelage of Miss Mary Denniss MBE.

 

Since his full appointment, Philip has enjoyed participating in numerous concerts with the Choir all over the country, notably the International Rugby Sevens Festival in Bournemouth in May and the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in July 2008, where the Choir was placed fifth.

 

As a cellist, Competition successes include: Hampshire Music Awards in 1998-2002, Music at Beaulieu Award Winner 2005, Michael James Scholarship recipient 2005, Royal College of Music Entrance Scholarship 2007, International Shostakovich Festival Manchester participant 2006.

Philip has recently received orchestral work with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Great Britain. He has recently had two compositions written for him.

 

Philip has received masterclasses from: Vivian Pike, Jeanette Ager, Li wei Qin, Ralph Kirschbaum, Endellion Quartet, Sir Mark Elder, and Mary Denniss MBE.
