You are following  FULL COURSE, HIGHER TIER there are two parts to the course.

  • 1 Coursework  This has two parts. A written design project and practical work which counts for 60% of the marks.
  • 2 Examination A written two and a half hour paper which counts for 40% of the marks.


Written design project. (Coursework)

This contains 8 sections.

  1. Situation - What are the circumstances which have made you decide you want to make a particular job.
  2. Problem - You need to say what sort of job you need to make to overcome the situation defined.
  3. Research - Looking at - Products on the market and recording information about those products such as materials they are made from, cost, sizes and how they are made - opinions of people who use such products perhaps a survey - investigating space if the product is to fit somewhere - investigating sizes of people who are to use the product - use of photographs - safety - finishes - durability. these are just some of the areas for investigation.
  4. Analysis - Looking at research and making comment on what you have found out from your investigations - what is useful and what is not. Highlight the good points of articles you have investigated as well as the not so good. Indicate how your proposed job will benefit from having done the investigations.
  5. Specification - Make a list of about ten things you would wish your design to do.
  6. Ideas - Start off by brainstorming, that is putting down on paper any idea, no matter how complicated or silly, that comes into your head. Then take the best of these ideas to plan out more carefully. These should include details of material, construction and working parts. Remember that your ideas have to fit with your specification.
  7. Development - select one of your ideas and improve it to make it work better, look better, feel better and generally be better. Price up the materials and provide a list of all the pieces you will need with sizes.
  8. Evaluation - once the object has been made you will have to point out its good points, its bad points, things that went wrong or had to be changed when it was being made and suggest improvements that you could make if you had the chance to construct the job again.
