Release
RAM
If you use Windows regularly in your business, you can't
have failed to experience the frozen screen, or other system
crashes. Until now I used to just put up with them, curse,
reboot the machine and get on with things. But thanks to a
new piece of software I finally understand not only what was
causing the crashes, but what to do about them, and it
doesn't even claim to be for this purpose.
Release RAM is a small program that constantly monitors
the amount of available RAM on your system. I already knew
that Windows is notorious for using too much RAM and memory
leaks but didn't realise that so many third party
applications that load huge DLLs into RAM then leave them
there even after the application is terminated, and I had no
idea how bad the situation really was until I could see it
happening in real time constantly updated right in my task
bar.
After installing the trial version of Release Ram, I
could see how much of my available RAM was used and never
returned during the course of opening, using and then
closing the various programs I use throughout the day. Its
not uncommon to see a program use up to 30 MB of RAM and
only return 1 -5 MB when it closed, which is why I kept
running out of RAM. A tiny button at the bottom of my screen
keeps me constantly informed of the level of available RAM.
As I write I have 42.14MB available.
Before installing Release RAM, Windows would crash on
average 3 or 4 times a day, sometimes many more and I have a
not unreasonable 128 MB to play with. I've been using it for
a month now and, coincidence or not, I only crashed twice.
Just by launching it with Windows, it automatically frees up
a huge chunk of RAM used in start up. I also have it set to
check every half hour to make sure I have at least 64 MB
free, releasing it if necessary. If my system ever drops
below 5MB of available RAM, the program automatically jumps
in and frees up all the available RAM that is not being
currently used by the programs I have open.
Whatever you do don't let the trial period expire as
you'll never be able to go back to your old ways with the
reboot button. I've known people begging for a release code
when they realise how much they need this program.
I would highly recommend this product for anybody using
Windows 95, 98 or NT 4.0. You won't find a better way of
spending $15, with bulk offers to share with a friend or
