Chester Hospitals - Nursing through the ages

1763 -  nurses paid £4 per year
1840 - nurses given a sovereign as a reward for good conduct.
1862 - nurses becoming extremely hard to obtain,  nurses paid 20/ - a year in beer money,
1862 - two nurses sent to prison, a third nurse sacked for ‘grossly indecent conduct.’
1867 - the first mention of nurse training appears in the Chester Infirmary records
1867 - nurses provided with a uniform
1873 -  Dr. Edward Waters - "hospital should start its own Nurses’ Institute "
1873 - proper nurse training scheme introduced
1873 - Nurses Pay
1874 - Nurses have to be able to read and write
1901 - strict discipline applied to nurses and long hours. Bye Laws
1924 - nursing  recognised as profession
1920-30s  - long hours worked by nurses
1947 - Chester Infirmary - Nurses League formed
1956 - Nurses Pay - Chester Infirmary 1956
1955 - Nurses’ home
1956 -Nurse education
