Oakmere Rehabilitation Centre & Hospital


This was established as a Miners’ Rehabilitation Centre at Oakmere in 1943. Oakmere Hall was bought by the Miners’ Welfare  Commission to care for injured miners and to enable them to return to work as soon as possible. It provuided a rehabilitation service to North Wales and Lancashire coalfields. It became part of the NHS in 1951 and became  a treatmant centre for injured men from any industries. From 1968 it accepted male and female out-patients mostly from the Vale Royal district of Cheshire. From 1974 it was administered by Mersey Regional Health Authority. By that date its scope hgad extended to include patients with various injuries as well as diseases e.g. neurological disorders, strokes. Children with cerebral palsy and spina-bifida were also treated. Inpatients and out-patients also had access to physiotherapy and hydrotherapy in concentrated individual programmes.  In January 1978 the Hall  was given  Grade 11 listing by Vale Royal District.
