Series 1: Episode 1
Forty-year-old Leeds housewife Alison Braithwaite gets a lottery ticket as a birthday present from youngest daughter Charlotte, who is legally too young to gamble. The ticket wins Alison the £38million Eurolottery jackpot, but she doesn't tell the family. Meanwhile, husband David is embarking on an affair with his secretary Elaine.
Series 1: Episode 2
Alison maintains her silence about her good fortune, with good reason when her daughters demand a share of some money she has been given by her mother. Alison recruits friends Pauline and Marion to help her sets up a charity, the Jane Crowther Trust, with her friends Marion and Pauline, so she can put the winnings to good use. Meanwhile, selfish husband David's affair with Elaine develops over a game of Scrabble.
Series 1: Episode 3
Alison makes progress with her charitable trust plans, while David plans to spend a night with Elaine, Sarah falls for her drama teacher, but he turns out to be gay, and Virginia gets mugged.
Series 1: Episode 4
David ends his affair with Elaine, but too many people know about his shenanigans for him to keep it under wraps. Virginia takes revenge on Megan, and Sarah plays truant so she can be with Phil.
Series 1: Episode 5
David and Alison are struggling to keep a lid on their secrets, while Sarah decides to come clean about falling pregnant.
Series 1: Episode 6
With newspaper interest reaching fever pitch, Alison is forced to admit to her family that she won the £38million and used it to set up the charitable trust. Apart from Charlotte, they all want to get their hands on as much as the cash as possible. Meanwhile, Sarah comes to a decision about the baby.

Series 2: Episode 1
Seven months after the family finds out about Alison's fortune, they move into a flash mansion and David holds a garden party to impress people he knows. But Alison is still unhappy after discovering he has been unfaithful. She is threatening divorce and flirting with his handsome brother, Graham, even though he is married with two kids. Virginia and her sisters try to test their father's resolve to make his marriage work by paying former neighbour Megan to seduce him. Meanwhile, Virginia is in a relationship with university pal Tamsin, Sarah is pregnant with Phil's baby, and Charlotte is being bullied at school.
Series 2: Episode 2
The girls arrange for their parents to have a second honeymoon in the Lake District but the presence of David's brother Graham and sister-in-law Helen brings problems. Only Virginia is around when Sarah goes into labour.
Series 2: Episode 3
Amid the wreckage of her marriage to David, Alison tells Graham she has strong feelings for him. He claims his marriage is also a misery but really has ulterior motives for pursuing his sister-in-law. Meanwhile, David is rekindling his relationship with Elaine and forgets Charlotte's birthday.
Series 2: Episode 4
Graham is keen to get his hands on some of Alison's money as he is facing bankruptcy. They begin an affair – but there's a private investigator on their tail. Charlotte forces the family to come together to appear on a TV game show, and Virginia promises to buy Megan a house, car and other luxuries.
Series 2: Episode 5
David is desperate to end Alison's affair with Graham, but then Sarah catches him in a compromising position with Elaine.
Series 2: Episode 6
Charlotte goes missing on her first day at her new school, and Pauline discovers that a huge amount of money is missing from the Trust's accounts.
Series 2: Episode 7
Alison is upset when Pauline is arrested, and Virginia is under pressure to admit that she was the one who stole the money from the charity so that she could buy Megan's affections.
Series 2: Episode 8
It's the day of Sarah's church wedding to Phil, after their secret marriage in a Leeds register office, but Sarah's having doubts after what went on at her hen night. Graham wants to be paid off by Alison, but she turns the tables on him.

series three
Aired 2002
Series 3: Episode 1
Alison takes the family to Buckingham Palace where she is to receive her knighthood for services to charity. Then Dame Alison discovers she is pregnant – and the father isn't David. Tamsin also falls pregnant, which tests her relationship with Virginia. And things get worse when a newspaper reveals that Alison's winning lottery ticket was bought by Charlotte, who was too young too gamble. Meanwhile, Phil's mother plans to christen William, Sarah and Phil's baby, behind the Braithwaites' back.
Series 3: Episode 2
The press is hounding the family and Eurolottery is demanding that Alison return the £38million as Charlotte broke the rules by being too young to buy a ticket. In the midst of the mayhem, David makes a last-ditch attempt to save his marriage, Sarah gets raunchy with teacher Daniel Wolfenden (Alun Raglan), and Charlotte gets into a fight.
Series 3: Episode 3
A heavily-pregnant Alison is forced to take the stand in the High Court as Eurolottery sues her for the £38million. The family encourage her to lie – but they're all in for a surprise.
Series 3: Episode 4
A death in the family brings Alison and David together at the funeral, where an unwelcome guest is in attendance.
Series 3: Episode 5
Graham is back on the scene, providing temptation for Alison. When Megan gets involved with Virginia again, she ends up being abducted by barmy Beth Wolfenden.
Series 3: Episode 6
David flees after robbing a bank and ends up in an isolated bed & breakfast with Graham. Megan is dumped in the wilds by Beth. When Alison goes into early labour, her cab driver Steve Searle (Ray Winstone) suggests a way to save the family from losing the fortune.

series four
(2003)
Series 4: Episode 1
Alison, now the new mother of baby Katie, plans an amicable divorce with David but bitterness soon explodes when David's old flame Elaine reappears and Charlotte misunderstands something she overhears when Alison is visited by Mike. Meanwhile, Alison won't talk to Virginia and Megan, who are living together and planning to marry. They soon have Sarah under their roof, too, when she leaves Daniel.
Series 4: Episode 2
The divorce proceedings get messier – Alison changes the locks and repossesses David's Porsche, while he sends endless taxis and takeaway delivery boys to the house. Meanwhile, Megan becomes a customer of Sarah's wedding planning business, seeking a blessing for her relationship with Virginia, but Virginia has had another taste of Tamsin so sparks fly when the two women have the family over for dinner.
Series 4: Episode 3
On the day of their wedding, Megan discovers that Virginia has been up to mischief with Tamsin, David and Alison have a last attempt to sort out their divorce without going to court, and Nick the gardener springs a surprise.
