About the Breed
Working
The German Wirehaired Pointer is first and foremost a working gundog, a first class hunt, point retriever, in that order.
Field trials are the shop window for the breed and how the breeds working ability is gauged. However not everyone can field trial, for whatever reason be it, time, financial, work and indeed many people have no desire to field trial. It is important that to get the best from your
'wire', it has its physical and mental stimuli, hence it must have its energies channeled to some discipline i.e. dummy work, falconry, deerstalking etc..Halving said the above, coupled with the breed being aloof/proud, it is not for the first time owner. Nor for anyone with a short fuse. For although a very demanding breed, initially, the rewards are tenfold and you will have a trustworthy companion for life.
Showing
Although all my dogs work, I also enjoy
showing(for which I make no apologies) and meeting fellow breed enthusiasts and I feel it is an important part in the breeds development and in moving the breed on to the next level.Buying a Pup
Before you acquire your pup, you can fulfill all the commitments towards your pet, only buy from a reputable breeder. Make sure his or her stock has been put through the various BVA/Kennel Club health schemes. If you are not sure contact the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of Great Britain and you will be given all the help and advice you need and better still, join the club.
