Age of Kings

Game Description

Age of Kings (aka Age of Empires II) is a Real Time Strategy game set in the middle ages. You build up your civilisation from the dark ages- where you start with a town centre, a scout, and three villigers- through the imperial age, where you can build cannons and other cool heavy weaponry (if your civilisation is able).

AOK is about my favourite game, excluding Unreal Tournament, and one of the few reasons I keep Windoze on my system (the other two reasons being internet access and my family). The only problem is that a game takes ages to play. To rectify this, I usually whip up some wierd scenarios where I can either destroy the enemy at will or loose quickly.

Screen Captures

I had some full screen caps, but I generally run AOK at a 1280x1024 resolution, so they were like half a meg each. Instead, I have resized them to 800x640 (bringing them to about 200 kilobytes each, but I don't have that kind of server space) and cropped them to just the interesting part. The only round I've played where I have made use of the «Print Screen» key was a little scenario I whipped up called «Elephant Massacre,» which I may upload here sometime. This game starts you off in the post-imperial (all technologies researched) and some pakaderm-lovin' persians accross the lake in the dark age. The goal is to watch them develop (maybe gain some insight into the computer AI) and watch them send wave after wave of elephants to the slaughter at the hand of your numerous keeps and bombard towers. When you tire of this, go for the kill with a massive army of siege units and such!

This is the game minimap near the end. You can see the persians have grown up quite a bit, and I'm fortified as anything. To entertain myself between elephant massacres, I am sending an army of champions, bowmen, cannonc, and scorpians to the attack. They are visible in a square formation in the lower corner of the map.

Concentrating scorpian fire on the second-to-last elephant in that wave.

The last elephant is finished off by keeps.

The enemy galleons advanced to where they could fire beyond the range of my bombard towers and gaver my navy a lickin' before I sent it into a curved area of shore lined with bombard towers, luring the enemy ships into firing range.

Scenarios

Taiwan
  • taiwan.exe (56,4 kb): self-extracting EnZip archive
  • taiwan.scn (19,8 kb): the straight-up scenario file

An advanced group of chineese colonising taiwan find primitive vikings trying to do the same. (Yes, Taiwan is probably a big island, not a bunch of small ones. What do I know?) Basically a weak storyline to justify the silliness of this one.
