My Week (2000-07-08 Sat through 2000-07-20 Thu)

So, what's been so special about the last week (give/take a few days). It's been busy and filled with firsts. I should've written this up earlier as my mind's not what it never was, but here goes:

  • Saturday: Fit of inspiration leading to poll and guestbook. worked from about 0600 to 1000. Then my family and I spent two days reclaiming a portion of our yard that had been overgrown with bushes, grass, and small trees. How'd it get that way? It's a tiny, mostly inaccessible square of ground tucked away in a corner. Anyways, I used a chainsaw for the first time. We cut out a lot of greenery and old wood, culminating (more or less) with taking out a three story tree that was growing a bit into our roof. We then replaced some shingles, patched up our patio with some portland cement (general wear and tear over the past decade I suppose), and leveled out some of our uneven sidewalk that used to make a little lake every time it rained (using cement and sand mixture).
  • Tuesday: My sister and I had planed to go to Kings' Dominion, but the day before has realised we had to take our dogs to the groomers tuesday, so we made a big day of it. I programmed my VCR to catch Lois & Clark and Ned & Stacey the next day and then watched Star Trek: First Contact, consuming two or three bags of popcorn.
  • Wednesday: My first real interstate driving, onto I-95 south from Dale BLVD for an hour and ten minutes on the road to Doswell, which is ehere Kings' Dominion is. (see photos page for a photo from PKD and a link to their site). Heck of a day, long & tiring. I don't even feel like talking about it here. I'll go back in a year or two, but then mostly for the water park. BTW, though I never get recognition for it, I'm a nice guy. I gave my sister US$10 to get cheated from her by those carnie employee's o' PKD. On second thought, I guess I really did it to shut her up about the damn stuffed bear she wanted to win. She claims to feel better for having tried, she just doesn't get how those carnie games are played.
  • Sunday: preparing for orientation. doing some work on this web page in a fit of inspiration (the one leading to today's (2000-07-20 Thu) massive update w/ slight redesign).
  • Monday: took forever to get out the door w/ two turn-backs. finally on road by 13:00 for the four-hour drive. I drove the whole way, turning it into a five-hour drive with my pesky habit of staying within ten MPH of the speed limit. Hint for driving: cruise control is a lifesaver. When I do interstate driving, I zone out ever-so-slightly. Not in a dangerous way. I keep an eye on the other cars and for speed limit signs, but slow down to about 8 MPH below the speed limit and those green info signs stop registering with me. (Oh yeah, if not for my sister, I'd've missed the PKD exit last Wed.)
  • Tuesday-Wednesday: Orientation. Fun, fun, fun. Lots o' good info, signed up for classes, etc. I found out my 5 on the AP CS AB exam was worth six credit hours and that I had three credit hours of freshman english because of my english readiness score or my SATs or some such thing. Had somw computer problems trying to get into my CS1704 class, Intro to data structures and software engineering, but I told them what was going on and they got it fixed. They advised me to test out of CS1205, OS tools one, but I think I still have a thing or two to learn from it.
  • Thursday: picked up the dogs from boarding. went to grocery store for food. worked on this web page.

In conclusion, yeah, an exhausting few days.
